U.S.–Brazil Confrontation Grows After Embassy Labels Moraes “Beating Heart” of Bolsonaro Persecution

On July 24, 2025, the United States Embassy in Brazil publicly posted the following on its official X (formerly Twitter) account:

“Alexandre de Moraes is the beating heart of the complex of persecution and censorship against Bolsonaro.”

This direct accusation against Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes marks a highly unusual diplomatic escalation from the United States.

The Embassy’s statement coincided with the announcement of visa bans on Moraes and fellow judicial officials, alongside new trade tariffs explicitly tied to the judiciary’s actions.

Justice Moraes has played a key role in Brazil’s politically charged investigations of former President Jair Bolsonaro since the January 8, 2023 riots.

His orders included restrictions on Bolsonaro’s communications, house arrest, and blocking U.S.-based digital platforms—such as Rumble—for failing to comply with Brazilian court mandates.

In response to de Moraes’s actions, companies like Trump Media and Rumble sued him in U.S. federal court, arguing judicial overreach and the violation of U.S. speech protections.

The Trump administration linked a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, effective August 1, directly to these judicial actions, as confirmed in official government statements.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, steel exports to the U.S. represented 1.9% of Brazil’s total trade in 2024. Economists expect the tariff will cut these exports by 11% in 2025 (about 700,000 metric tons).

Diplomatic tensions escalated after Brazil’s President Lula condemned the U.S. measures as interference with judicial independence and a threat to national sovereignty.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian prosecutor general launched an inquiry into Bolsonaro’s son Eduardo, now living in the U.S., for lobbying American senators to impose sanctions on Moraes.
