Brazilian Markets Tumble as Inflation Concerns and Global Pressures Mount

The Brazilian stock market faced a challenging day on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. The Ibovespa index plummeted 1.18%, shedding 1,549.67 points to close at 129,962.06.

This marked the lowest level since August 8, 2024, when it closed at 128,660.88 points. The Brazilian real also weakened against the dollar.

The commercial dollar rose 1.00% to R$5.58, marking its third consecutive day of gains. Interest rate futures (DIs) accelerated, with some short- and medium-term maturities rising by nearly 2%.

September’s IPCA inflation data played a significant role in the market‘s downturn. While the figures aligned with market expectations, they left a bitter taste.

Igor Cadilhac, an economist at PicPay, noted clear signs of deterioration in recent readings despite some short-term deceleration.

The inflation report has led economists to revise their expectations for the upcoming Copom meeting. Many now anticipate a 0.50 percentage point increase in the Selic rate in November.

Leonardo Costa from ASA Investments highlighted that core services inflation remains elevated at 4.5–5%, well above the Central Bank’s 3% target.

Market Update

Finance Minister Fernando Haddad attributed part of the inflation increase to drought conditions. He emphasized that this was a temporary rise and argued that raising interest rates would not solve weather-related issues.

Global factors also contributed to the market’s decline. China’s underwhelming economic stimulus measures and ongoing tensions in the Middle East impacted commodity prices.

The release of the Federal Reserve’s latest meeting minutes added to market uncertainty. The Fed minutes revealed a division within the committee regarding the September rate cut decision.

This has led analysts to speculate that the Fed may opt for a smaller 0.25 percentage point cut at its next meeting rather than continuing with 0.50 point reductions.

In the stock market, commodity-linked companies faced significant pressure. Petrobras (PETR4) fell 1.01% as oil prices declined. Vale (VALE3) dropped 0.26% due to weakening iron ore prices in China.

Banking stocks were among the day’s biggest losers, with Banco do Brasil (BBAS3) down 2.04% and Bradesco (BBDC4) falling 1.97%. Looking ahead, market participants are bracing for the release of U.S. consumer inflation data on Thursday.

This report has the potential to significantly impact global markets, adding another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile trading environment.
