Peru’s President reaffirms defense of self-determination of the Saharawi Republic

The President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, reaffirmed his position in favor of the self-determination of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) after his government decided in August to break off relations and withdraw its state recognition.

“A year after establishing diplomatic relations with the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, we reaffirm our persistence [in] the defense of its sovereign self-determination,” the president said through his Twitter account.

Diplomatic relations between Peru and SADR began in May 1987 but were suspended in 1996 under Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000).

In September 2021, already under the current government of Pedro Castillo, they were re-established.

However, last August 9, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the withdrawal of recognition of SADR as a State and the rupture of any relationship.

“In support of the efforts of the Secretary General of the United Nations and the Security Council to reach a political, realistic, lasting, and consensual solution to the dispute over Western Sahara.

“Because there is no effective bilateral relationship to date, the Government of Peru has decided to withdraw recognition of SADR and to break off all relations with this entity,” the Foreign Ministry said at the time.

President Castillo has not given further details on the decision taken by the Government regarding SADR.
