Paraguayan Senators demand “respect” from the US for accusations of corruption

The Chamber of Senators of Paraguay responded by demanding “respect” from the United States for the accusation against Paraguay’s vice-president, Hugo Velázquez.

The statement comes after the US State Department sanctioned him for alleged corruption and provoked his resignation from the vice presidency and presidential pre-candidacy.

“The Chamber of Senators of the Nation declares to remind Mr. Ambassador [Marc Ostfield] and the Government of the United States of America that Paraguay is a sovereign and independent republic,” says the declaration, which ratifies “the respect to the sister North American nation” and demands “the same respect” for Paraguay.

The document, promoted by the bench that responds to former President Horacio Cartes (2013-2018), whose spokesman was Senator Juan Carlos Galaverna, repudiates “the questionable actions of the Ambassador of the United States of America and the timorous attitude of the President of the Republic (Mario Abdo Benítez), responsible for the management of foreign relations, according to constitutional mandate”.

Due to the US qualification as “significantly corrupt” and the scandal generated, Velázquez resigned from his presidential candidacy.
