Ecuador’s foreign minister is traveling to the United States to promote his candidacy for the UN Security Council

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Juan Carlos Holguín, Ecuador’s minister of foreign affairs and human mobility, will travel to the United States on Thursday to promote Quito’s candidacy to the United Nations Security Council, according to the institution.

In a press release, the Foreign Ministry said that during his stay in Washington DC, Holguín will also meet with senior officials of President Joe Biden’s administration to discuss bilateral cooperation issues.

The Foreign Minister will meet with “high-level executive authorities and representatives of the Senate to discuss issues of cooperation in the areas of trade, environment and security. He will also meet with OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro to discuss regional issues,” the document states.

Holguín’s trip to the U.S. comes at a time when the South American country’s president, Guillermo Lasso, is making changes to his cabinet following the resignation of Interior Ministry head Alexandra Vela.

Following Vela’s resignation, the head of state signed a decree creating the Ministry of Government and Political Management and the Ministry of the Interior, which will operate independently.
