Chile, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay launched candidacy for the 2030 World Cup

With the presence of Pablo Milad, president of the ANFP, and Alexandra Benado, minister of Sports, the official launch of the candidacy of Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay to host the 2030 World Cup was held in Montevideo on Tuesday.

The joint candidacy of the four South American countries has the motto ‘Centennial World Cup’, pointing to the fact of organizing the maximum event of football 100 years after the first World Cup event, organized by Uruguay in 1930.

Note that the South American dream of receiving a new World Cup will compete with the proposal of two European countries: Spain and Portugal.

“This is the dream of a continent. South America understands that football has to recognize and not dispute. There will be more World Cups, but 100 years are fulfilled once”, declared the president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), the Paraguayan Alejandro Domínguez.

“All of football owes a moral debt to those who dreamed of and made the first World Cup possible and that is why we want the World Cup to return to its cradle and to the country where it was born,” he added.

Meanwhile, the president of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), Ignacio Alonso, commented that “it is fair to organize the World Cup, 100 years, in the place where it all began, where they had the guts, the courage, the courage to put things on the table”.

The event at the Centenario Stadium also had the stellar presence of the President of the Republic of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou. “It is a long-awaited candidacy by the national population, by soccer fans, a long-standing job by soccer leaders, and successive governments have been bringing the ball closer to the goal so that we now have the definition instance,” he said.

“I think the four federations have been very smart to propose going together. Obviously the anchor is this tower, this stadium, the 100 years. The reason for bringing it to South America is the 1930 World Cup and the celebration of 100 years. But together we have more strength”, added the president.

Conmebol has not organized a competition of this type since Brazil 2014, where Germany was crowned champion after beating Argentina 1-0 with a goal from Mario Gotze. After this contest, Russia hosted it in 2018, Qatar will do so at the end of this year and later the World Cup will be played in 2026 in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
