Lula da Silva opens election campaign in São Paulo’s ABC region, his political birthplace

Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, presidential candidate for the Workers’ Party (PT, left), will begin his campaign in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, where he started his political career. Lula’s first public engagement as a candidate will be a visit to the Volkswagen plant on Tuesday afternoon, 16.

The act, scheduled for 7 a.m. to mark the start of the campaign at the MWM metallurgical company in São Paulo, was canceled for security reasons. The team in charge of Lula da Silva’s integrity suspended its participation in the event because it considered that there was not enough time to verify the security conditions at the site.

The visit to the Volkswagen plant at 2 p.m. is on the agenda and will be broadcast on the former president’s social networks. In the evening, Lula was to attend the inauguration of Minister Alexandre de Moraes as president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) in Brasilia. The event will begin at 7 p.m.

Lula da Silva has led the electoral polls since he was announced as a candidate. The former president achieved 45% of voting intention in the first round, against 34% of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), in a new round of FSB electoral research, commissioned by BTG Pactual, published on Monday, 15.

This Tuesday, the 16th, marks the official start of the 2022 electoral campaign, with candidates for the presidency of the Republic, state governments, and federal, state, and district parliaments able to distribute leaflets, hold rallies and disseminate materials in the streets and on the Internet in search of votes.
