Brazil’s new taboos: 60% of Lulistas oppose son or daughter marrying a Bolsonarista

PoderData surveyed voters who intend to vote for Lula da Silva from July 31 to August 2 on how they would feel if their son or daughter married a Bolsonaro sympathizer – and vice versa. The results show that more than half of Lulistas and Bolsonaristas think they would be “very unhappy” if they had a son or daughter-in-law who was an admirer of the other candidate.

The percentage is highest among former President Lula da Silva’s voters, with 60% saying they would be “very unhappy” if a son were to form a union with a Bolsonaro sympathizer.

Among Bolsonaristas, the climate is less tense – by a small margin. 52% would be “very unhappy” if a child had a Lulista partner. Another 13% say they would be “not very unhappy.” Another 8% would be “not very unhappy,” and for ¼, it would “make no difference.” for 28%, it would make “no difference.”

To get the results, PoderData asked respondents who they would vote for in the first round of elections. Only those who voted for Lula da Silva or Jair Bolsonaro, the two leading poll candidates, were surveyed. Each of them was asked about the marriage of a son or daughter to a sympathizer of the other candidate.

The poll was conducted by PoderData, a company of the Poder360 Jornalismo group, with its own resources and published in editorial partnership with TV Cultura. The data was collected between July 31 and August 2, 2022, through calls to cell phones and landlines.

Three thousand five hundred interviews were conducted in 322 cities across the 27 states. The margin of error is two percentage points. The confidence interval is 95%. The registration with the TSE is BR-08398/2022.
