Argentina Demands Falklands Talks After UK Cedes Chagos to Mauritius

Argentina’s government has formally urged the United Kingdom to resume sovereignty talks over the disputed Falkland Islands (Malvinas), citing Britain’s recent transfer of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius as a diplomatic blueprint.

The Argentine Foreign Ministry stated on May 27, 2025, that the Chagos agreement—a binding treaty recognizing Mauritian sovereignty after 58 years of British control—demonstrates colonial disputes can be resolved through “bilateral negotiations anchored in international law.”

This marks Argentina’s strongest push since the 1982 Falklands War, which left 649 Argentine troops, 255 British personnel, and three islanders dead.

The UK has governed the Falklands since 1833, when British forces expelled Argentine settlers. Argentina contends this violated international law, a position upheld by UN Resolution 2065 (1965), which mandates bilateral negotiations.

Despite a 2013 referendum where 99.8% of islanders voted to remain British, Argentina rejects self-determination claims, arguing the population represents an “implanted colonial community.”

The Chagos deal, finalized May 22, 2025, includes a 99-year lease for the UK/US military base on Diego Garcia and £101 million annual payments to Mauritius—a framework Argentina suggests could apply to Falklands negotiations.
