Latest: Rubio Backs Venezuela Talks Over Protests

Venezuela’s opposition has called a nationwide day of protest today to demand a date for the next presidential election.

Venezuela’s opposition has called protests in every state for Thursday, 22 October, to demand a date for a presidential election in 2027. The main rally in Caracas is due to start at 4:00 p.m. local time, which is also 4:00 p.m. US Eastern time.

The call comes from María Corina Machado, the opposition leader and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner, who is outside the country. For Americans, the protests test how quickly the country run by acting president Delcy Rodríguez moves towards a vote after the US operation that captured Nicolás Maduro in January.

What Is Planned on Thursday

Vente Venezuela, the party Machado founded, announced the mobilisation earlier this week. Machado then urged Venezuelans to take part, according to Europa Press and Infobae on 21 October.

Organisers say the events will be peaceful and will take place in all Venezuelan states. In Caracas, the main gathering is at Plaza Venezuela, in front of the Torre Polar office tower, at 4:00 p.m.

Carlos Fernández, a Vente Venezuela leader, said at a press conference that mothers, teachers and young people would join. He added that the Unitary Platform, the main opposition alliance, and parties outside it would also take part.

What the Opposition Demands

The organisers list three demands: Machado’s safe return to Venezuela, a formal electoral timetable for a presidential vote in 2027, and the freedom of political prisoners. Their slogan is “La fecha de la elección es la fecha de la liberación”, or “The election date is the date of liberation”.

Machado backs 24 July 2027 as the election date, the anniversary of the birth of independence hero Simón Bolívar. US Senator Bernie Moreno proposed that date in September, according to Voz.us.

Where Machado Is and Why It Matters

Machado has been reported in Panama and has not announced when she will return. Her communications coordinator, Claudia Macero, returned to Venezuela on 27 September, according to eldiario.com, but said she did not know when Machado would follow.

Supporters say Machado has made seven failed attempts to return this year, according to Voz.us. They say a boat trip was cancelled because of engine damage and that Caribbean islands refused landing permission for a flight, which no independent source has confirmed.

Our earlier report on her stance on amnesty and the 24 July vote covers the political background, and the Venezuela hub collects the latest news.

A Rival March the Same Day

El Nacional reports that the governing side has called its own march for 22 October. Diosdado Cabello, a senior chavista leader, announced it as a women’s march for breast-cancer awareness, with no time or route given.

Two events in one city on the same day raise the risk of clashes, but no source reports any plan by the authorities to restrict the opposition rally. Nothing in our reporting shows how the government will respond.

What Prediction Markets Say

On Polymarket, the “Venezuela presidential election scheduled by…?” market prices the 31 December 2026 option at 8.5%, with US$644,439 traded (22 October 2026, 11:06 a.m. ET). Read literally, traders see little chance that the question resolves yes by year-end.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

What It Means for US Readers

Washington has a stake in how Venezuela’s transition ends, from oil exports to migration. A clear election date would give US investors and policymakers a timetable they can plan around.

A large, peaceful turnout would strengthen the opposition’s case for a 2027 vote. Violence or arrests would more likely harden positions on both sides.

What Is Not Known

No turnout figure exists yet, because the rally has not started as this article is published. Nothing is known about arrests, injuries or any police response.

The government has not announced an election timetable, and the 2027 date remains an opposition demand. Machado’s return date and route are also unknown.
