82% of Chileans believe that the presence of immigrants in the country is “excessive”

82% of Chileans assured that the presence of immigrants in the country is excessive.

However, the majority confessed never having had a bad experience with them, according to a survey by the Catholic University.

“82% of those surveyed believe that the number of immigrants in the country is excessive, 15% said that it is adequate, and 2% that it is low”, the institution stated through its Bicentennial National Survey.

The study asked Chileans how often they have had bad experiences with immigrants, such as disagreements, tensions, fights, or conflicts, and only 7% answered affirmatively.

45% disagree with the statement that immigrants limit Chileans’ chances of finding work, compared to 37% who support that idea.

Two out of three respondents said that immigrants should have the same rights as Chileans to access health, housing, and education, compared to 22% who responded negatively.

However, 71% of respondents said there is a conflict between Chileans and immigrants.

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, Chile has been experiencing a migration crisis due to the enormous number of foreigners, mostly Venezuelan nationals, who enter through unauthorized border crossings daily through Bolivia.
