Vaca Muerta Nears Records, But US$20 Billion Gap Looms

Key Facts

  • June output — Argentina pumped 914,900 barrels per day nationally, near its all-time high.
  • Shale star — Vaca Muerta alone delivered 633,946 barrels per day in the same month.
  • Global share — The country is approaching roughly 1% of world oil production.
  • Ready to export — Analysts at BBVA reckon Argentina already has about 250,000 barrels a day it could sell abroad.
  • Export goal — YPF projects US$50 billion in Vaca Muerta exports by 2031.
  • Infrastructure gap — US$15–20 billion more is needed for pipelines, ports and terminals.
  • Tech tug-of-war — US pressure and Chinese tech collide over Huawei gear near the basin.

Argentina’s shale heartland is pumping near-record crude. Yet a missing US$20 billion in infrastructure could stall the boom just as Washington and Beijing circle.

Vaca Muerta is fuelling Argentina’s oil boom to near-record levels. National output hit 914,900 barrels per day in June, just shy of the magic million milestone, with the shale basin itself pumping 633,946 barrels daily. That puts the country on track for about 1% of world production, a rare leap for a nation long known for gas shortages. The boom is real, but so is the bottleneck. Without up to US$20 billion in new infrastructure, this momentum could stall. For anyone living or investing in Latin America, this is the region’s sharpest energy story right now.

Vaca Muerta’s Record Output, But Not Quite One Million

The numbers, from sector monitor an oil-sector monitor ALyC via Infobae, are striking. National crude output hit 914,900 barrels per day in June 2026.

Vaca Muerta, the Patagonian shale powerhouse, contributed 633,946 barrels of that, according to Ámbito. That is a near-record, but not the 1 million bpd some headlines hint at.

Argentina still has room to grow. The basin’s May shale output was 626,077 bpd, per Economies.com, showing steady momentum.

The world’s total production is vast, so even 915,000 bpd is just under 1% of it. The gap to the magic million is narrowing, but the infrastructure needed to sustain further growth remains the critical constraint.

Looking ahead, Vaca Muerta’s potential is immense. Developers are drilling faster and completing wells more efficiently.

Yet the surface logistics — pipelines, pumps, and port capacity — have not kept pace. The subsurface is rich; the surface is the new frontier.

Analysts at BBVA Research note that Argentina’s oil boom is now a story of connecting the basin to the world. The current exportable surplus of 250,000 barrels per day already needs better evacuation routes.

Every additional barrel of production requires a corresponding investment in midstream capacity.

The US$20 Billion Infrastructure Challenge

Every barrel needs a pipeline, a port, and a terminal. BBVA Research warns that Argentina needs between US$15 billion and US$20 billion in extra investment for this midstream network.

That includes transport lines, compression stations, and export ports. The current surplus is already meaningful, with BBVA estimating a 250,000 barrel-per-day exportable surplus.

But moving that oil to global buyers requires infrastructure that is not fully built yet. The Vaca Muerta Oil Sur (VMOS) pipeline, a US$3.2 billion project, offers some relief with a 377,400 bpd capacity.

It is not enough on its own. Additional pipelines and port expansions are in planning, but financing remains a challenge.

The cost of inaction is high. Without the needed investment, production growth could plateau.

The industry is already feeling the pinch, with some operators slowing drilling programmes due to evacuation bottlenecks. The midstream gap is now the single biggest threat to the boom.

Argentina’s government is courting private capital, including from the United States and China. But geopolitical tensions over technology and trade are complicating the picture.

The infrastructure investment needed is vast, but the potential returns are equally large, with YPF projecting US$50 billion in exports by 2031.

The next two years will be pivotal. If the midstream network expands in time, Vaca Muerta could become a top-tier global exporter.

If not, the boom may peak earlier than expected. The world is watching.

YPF’s Big Bet on Export Riches

Argentina’s state-controlled energy giant YPF sees a huge prize ahead. It projects Vaca Muerta could generate US$50 billion in exports by 2031.

That figure, reported by EnergyNow, would transform Argentina’s trade balance. Energy exports already reached US$11.1 billion in 2025, and the country is becoming a dependable supplier.

But those export goals depend on solving the logistics puzzle. As BBVA notes, the constraint has shifted from the subsurface to the surface.

It is no longer about drilling wells; it is about moving the oil. YPF is investing in its own infrastructure, including the VMOS pipeline, but it cannot go it alone.

The company is also partnering with international investors to expand port capacity. The prize is substantial, but so is the risk of failure.

YPF’s projections assume that infrastructure keeps pace with production growth. That will require coordination between the public and private sectors, as well as regulatory stability.

The government has shown willingness to support the sector, but execution remains the key challenge.

If YPF succeeds, Vaca Muerta could rival other major shale plays in the United States. If not, the country risks squandering a once-in-a-generation opportunity.

The stakes could not be higher.

US-China Tug of War Over Huawei Tech

The energy boom now has a geopolitical subplot. CALF, a Neuquén utility, signed a contract with Huawei for fibre-optic and digital infrastructure.

The project sits near Vaca Muerta itself. US officials allegedly warned that executives’ visas could be restricted if the deal proceeded.

CALF says a US embassy official made that threat. China’s embassy called it interference in Argentina’s affairs.

The dispute also touches YPF, whose monitoring centre would use Huawei technology. This adds a layer of tension to an otherwise pure energy story.

The Huawei dispute is part of a broader US-China rivalry over technology and influence in Latin America. The US is wary of China’s growing presence in critical infrastructure, while China views such projects as part of its Belt and Road Initiative.

Argentina is caught in the middle.

The immediate impact on oil production is minimal, but the long-term risk is real. If geopolitical tensions escalate, they could deter investment in the very infrastructure needed to sustain the boom.

Both Washington and Beijing are courting Argentina, but with conflicting demands.

For now, the energy sector is pressing ahead, hoping that diplomacy will prevail. The industry is closely watching the outcome, as any disruption could affect the flow of capital and technology.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Vaca Muerta’s current oil output?

Vaca Muerta produced 633,946 barrels per day in June 2026. National output was 914,900 bpd the same month, according to the an oil-sector monitor monitor.

How much infrastructure investment does Vaca Muerta need?

BBVA Research estimates US$15 billion to US$20 billion is needed for pipelines, compression, terminals, and ports. YPF projects about US$130 billion in cumulative investment through 2031.

Is the US-China dispute affecting oil production?

Not directly. The dispute centres on a Huawei-CALF fibre project near the basin. It adds political risk, but production has not been interrupted.

What are Argentina’s export prospects from the shale boom?

YPF projects US$50 billion in exports by 2031. Currently, the country has a 250,000 barrel-per-day exportable surplus, per BBVA Research.
