Survey reveals 41% of Bolsonaro voters hold positive or neutral views of Lula’s administration

By · June 9, 2023 · 2 min read

A survey conducted by Ipec (formerly Ibope) revealed that 41% of voters who supported the re-election of Jair Bolsonaro in 2022 hold either a positive or neutral view of the governance of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

The study, released on Friday (June 9), found that within this segment, 8% rated Lula’s administration as “good” or “excellent,” and 33% deemed it “regular”.

Conversely, 56% of respondents who backed Bolsonaro in the previous election regard Lula’s tenure as either “bad” or “terrible”. A marginal 2% were uncertain or unable to answer.

Ipec surveyed 2,000 Brazilians aged 16 and over from June 1st to June 5th across 127 municipalities in Brazil. The margin of error stands at +/- 2 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.

Another 27% viewed it as “regular”. Respondents who categorized it as “bad” (1%), “terrible” (2%), or uncertain (2%) collectively make up 5%.

Ipec (Intelligence, Research, and Consulting) is a research organization led by former Ibope executives. Ibope, a similar research company, was engaged in opinion, political, and market surveys and ceased operations in 2021 after 79 years.

A DIP IN POSITIVE PERCEPTIONS

In an overall assessment involving all voters, the positive perception of Lula’s administration has declined from 41% to 37% over five months. Conversely, negative views have risen from 24% to 28%.

According to the survey, 53% of Brazilians approve of Lula’s administration, while 40% disapprove.

The remaining 7% were unable to respond. The most significant drop was seen in the Northeast region, Lula’s key electoral base, where the administration’s approval rating fell from 55% to 45% during the period.

Among the poorest demographic (those earning up to one minimum wage per month), disapproval also saw an increase.

In April, Lula received a 53% approval rating from this social group. Currently, it stands at 43%.
