Weather & What to Wear
FOUR-DAY OUTLOOK
Friday feels like a steam room: high humidity and a high around 29°C, with heavy clouds building into the afternoon. Carry an umbrella but do not plan around the rain.
Wear the lightest cotton you own, pack water, and keep a metro card charged for quick escapes into air conditioning.
The weekend stays warm and unsettled—mornings are your best window for the beach or the Jardim Botânico before the downpours roll in.
Sunset today: 5:52 pm · Water near 22°C, choppy, with red flags at Posto 9 and Leblon this morning; swim near lifeguards only.

What to See & Do
FRIDAY IN RIO
Museu do Amanhã and a Praça Mauá walk
Start at Museu do Amanhã in Praça Mauá, Centro. It opens 10am to 6pm today with the cosmos and climate exhibits in full flow.
The futuristic building is calm and air-conditioned, perfect for this heat. You can reach it on the VLT from Carioca or take the metro to Uruguaiana and walk 12 minutes.
Afterwards, walk the Mauá Píer for the harbour breeze. The Museu de Arte do Rio is next door, open Tuesday to Monday (closed Wednesdays), 11am to 6pm, R$20 and free on Tuesdays.
Both are steps from confraternised restaurants in Rua do Mercado. Keep the afternoon flexible—if the rain holds off, a walk to Largo de São Francisco da Prainha is a quiet finish.
Jardim Botânico early, then shade
Rain usually holds off until mid-afternoon, so go early to Jardim Botânico in Jardim Botânico, open 8am to 5pm. Foreign visitors pay more than Brazilian residents.
The imperial palms alley is at its best in soft morning light. Stay on the main paths and listen for the monkeys moving before the heat peaks.
By noon, head downhill to Horto’s shaded cafés or back to the metro. If clouds build faster, duck into the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, open 10am to 6pm free today in Centro.
Plug in with good wifi and real coffee
Try Grão de Grão in Botafogo, Rua Voluntários da Pátria, open until 7pm with strong wifi and a quiet back room. It is a known remote-work stop.
In Centro, head to Livraria da Travessa in Travessa do Ouvidor, which has a café, solid espresso and tables for a couple of hours.
If you need a desk, Space Coworking in Botafogo is open weekdays until 7pm, with day passes near R$80.
A slower hilltop afternoon
Skip the climate-controlled museums and ride the bondinho to Santa Teresa for hillside bars and ateliers.
Parque das Ruínas is free and open 8am to 5pm, with the best view over the bay on a clear morning. Arrive before 10am to beat the heat.
Lunch at Bar do Mineiro, Santa Teresa, with its slow-cooked classics and cold drafts. Rua Paschoal Carlos Magno’s galleries stay open into the afternoon.
Feira de São Cristóvão and Lapa
The main move tonight is Feira de São Cristóvão, Centro. The big pavilions of Northeastern food, live forró and beer start humming late afternoon and run into the night.
Entry is small, food plates run R$25–R$50, and the whole place feels like a different Brazil. Go hungry and bring cash, though many stalls take Pix.
If you want a quieter drink, the blue-lit alleys of Lapa are alive on a Friday. Start at Bar da Boa in Lapa for cold chope and samba before the crowds thicken.
For cocktails with a view, head to Flamengo’s Praia do Flamengo quiosques—less packed than Copacabana and perfect with the evening breeze.
Museu Nacional de Belas Artes — Centro — 10am–6pm, free; partial reopening with Brazilian moderns
CCBB visits — Centro — 9am–8pm, free; current visual arts exhibition
Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) — Praça Mauá — 11am–6pm, R$20, free on Tuesdays
Real Gabinete Português de Leitura — Centro — 10am–5pm, free; the neo-Manueline reading room
Parque Lage — Jardim Botânico — 8am–5pm, free; the courtyard café with shade
Theatro Municipal guided visit — Centro — Wed–Sat, R$20; check midday tour times
04
Getting Around
TRANSPORT
Metrô lines 1, 2 and 4 are running full service today with the single fare at R$7.90. Use the Giro card to avoid queues at Uruguaiana, Carioca and General Osório.
The VLT is normal through Centro, and the seafront ciclovia is open but slick. If rain hits, expect surge pricing on apps between 5pm and 8pm.
05
Where to Eat
LUNCH & DINNER
Lunch: Try Confeitaria Colombo in Centro for a classic midday plate under the mirrors, or Adega do Bistrô in Santa Teresa for slow food and shade. Budget R$60–R$90 with a drink.
Dinner: At Feira de São Cristóvão, go for baião de dois or carne de sol at the first busy stall. In Lapa, Bar da Boa serves hearty petiscos and cold chope for around R$50–R$70 a head.
06
Practical Info
GOOD TO KNOW
Carry a small umbrella, a water bottle and a charged phone. Most museums take Pix and cards, but the feira runs faster with cash.
Book the Theatro Municipal tour in advance if you want the earliest slot; cultural venues fill fast on rainy Fridays.
Near Central do Brasil and around the feira, keep your phone zipped and avoid empty streets after midnight—stay where the music and crowds are.
07
Community & Lifestyle
FOR NEWCOMERS
Digital nomads are gathering at Grão de Grão in Botafogo today before the rain, with a loose co-working table from 9am to noon. Many newcomers plug into the Friday WhatsApp expat group for spontaneous coffee.
If you want a low-key meet, the Feira de São Cristóvão is the city’s true mixing pot—join a forró circle and someone will teach you the steps within a song.
08
Game Day
THE WEEKEND ROUND
No big Carioca football match is set for Friday evening, which leaves the night open for feira and music. Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco and Botafogo fixtures this weekend are still awaiting official confirmation for local kickoff times.
If you want a football bar, head to Botafogo’s Bar do Elias or Copa’s Sinuca de Vila. Both screen whatever fixture is on and fill early on Fridays.
The real game tonight is social: the feira’s dance floor and Lapa’s samba bars are where the city gathers before a rainy weekend.
09
Business & Markets
WEEK IN FIGURES
The market mood is cautious. Latin American equities were mixed in the last session, with Brazilian shares slightly firmer while several neighbours eased.
The dollar firmed against the real, the Mexican peso and the Chilean peso, but slipped against the Colombian peso. Metal prices and gold ticked higher, giving some support to commodity-linked names.
For expat professionals, the week ahead will be about positioning before the weekend’s policy news. Watch for any signs that softness in the region’s currencies will feed into import costs and local pricing power.

FAQ
QUICK ANSWERS
Is the beach a good idea today?
Only early. The water is around 22°C with choppy conditions and red flags at Posto 9 and Leblon this morning.
Go before 10am and swim near a lifeguard. Afternoon rain and rough surf make it a poor bet later.
What is open in Centro on a Friday?
Most museums are open today: Museu do Amanhã, CCBB, Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, MAR, Real Gabinete Português de Leitura and Paço Imperial.
The Metro Uruguaiana stop puts you in the middle of it. The VLT connects Praça Mauá and Carioca.
Do I need cash or does Pix work?
Pix works almost everywhere now, including cafés and smaller stalls. But the Feira de São Cristóvão still moves faster with some cash in small notes.
Carry at least R$80–R$100 in cash for quick transactions and street food.
