Petrobras $5.1 Billion Fleet Expansion Targets Brazilian Shipbuilding Revival

Brazil’s state-run oil company Petrobras announced plans to commission 52 new vessels by 2026 with a 29 billion reais ($5.1 billion) investment. CEO Magda Chambriard outlined the initiative at a Porto de Itajaí event attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The strategy aims to modernize Petrobras’ fleet, reduce reliance on foreign-chartered ships, and revive Brazil’s shipbuilding industry. The revised plan surpasses earlier targets, increasing vessel numbers from 48 to 52.

These include supply ships, tankers, and support boats to enhance offshore oil operations, particularly in the Búzios field, projected to produce 2 million barrels daily by 2030. Petrobras mandates 45–65% local content in vessel construction, prioritizing Brazilian materials and labor.

Job Creation and Industrial Revival

The project is expected to generate 50,000 direct and indirect jobs, aligning with Lula’s reindustrialization agenda. Petrobras has already secured contracts for 12 hybrid-powered supply vessels worth $2.8 billion, built at Brazilian shipyards in Navegantes and Itajaí. These partnerships emphasize sustainability alongside economic growth.

Global Partnerships and Exploration

Petrobras is engaging foreign investors to strengthen local shipyards, including discussions with Chinese firms. The company holds stakes in the Pelotas Basin, a frontier exploration area off southern Brazil.

Partner Shell plans exploratory drilling by 2028, with potential reserves estimated in the billions of barrels. Success here could transform Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul into energy hubs.
