Peruvian Economy Exceeds Expectations with Strong Growth in May

In May 2024, Peru’s economy experienced notable growth, surpassing expectations for the second consecutive month, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

The economic activity index, a key measure of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), rose by 5% compared to the previous year.

This increase aligns with predictions from both the Central Bank and the Ministry of Economy.

They expect the economy to grow around 3% in 2024. This marks a notable recovery from last year’s 0.6% contraction, which resulted from social unrest and bad weather.

The ongoing recovery has also lessened the pressure on the central bank to quickly lower interest rates.

A key driver of this growth was a more than 300% rise in the fishing sector, which had suffered greatly from the El Niño weather pattern the previous year.

Peru, a leading global supplier of fishmeal, especially anchoveta, greatly benefited from this recovery.

The Peruvian economy’s resilience was also evident in April 2024, when it grew by 5.3%, the highest rate in 32 months.

This growth was fueled by increased private spending, higher economic confidence, lower inflation, and favorable financing conditions.

Furthermore, export growth, particularly in sectors like copper and fishmeal, played a crucial role.

Despite these positive developments, challenges remain. The recovery is not uniform across all sectors.

While primary sectors like mining and agriculture are doing well, non-primary sectors tied to domestic demand still struggle.

Overall, the outlook for Peru’s economy in 2024 is positive. There is potential to surpass regional peers in growth.
