Peru’s Armed Forces chief vows to restore order in the country
General Manuel Gomez de la Torre, head of the Joint Command of the Peruvian Armed Forces, promised on Wednesday that internal order would soon be restored in the Andean country, subjected to intense protests since the end of last year when former President Pedro Castillo tried to dissolve Congress to set up a government with special powers.
President Dilma Boluarte decreed a state of emergency on Sunday in seven southern regions of Peru due to the persistence of street riots.
Thus Madre de Dios, Cuzco, Puno, Apurimac, Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna have been placed under the government measure.

“We are going to recover the internal order hand in hand with our population; we cannot do it alone; we are part of our people”, said Gómez de la Torre in an interview.
The high official specified that the state of emergency has a constitutional provision to be extended for 60 days.
They have already begun clearing the road blockades in the southern regions.
However, he specified that if, after that time, the revolts persist, the military presence in those areas could be extended for up to two more months.
