Lula’s Brazil Faces Backlash for Condemning Israel, Staying Silent on Iran

Brazil’s government, led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has drawn sharp criticism at home and abroad for its stance on the recent conflict between Israel and Iran.

When Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry condemned Israel’s actions as a violation of Iran’s sovereignty and international law.

The government warned that these attacks could push the region into a larger war, threatening global peace and the world economy.

However, Brazil did not explicitly condemn Iran when it launched hundreds of missiles at Israel, targeting residential neighborhoods rather than military sites, in retaliation.

Instead, Brazil called for restraint from both sides and urged an end to the fighting. This approach angered many in Brazil and abroad. Jewish organizations in Brazil said the government was taking Iran’s side.

They also criticized it for not showing support for Israeli civilians who suffered from the missile attacks. The Israeli ambassador in Brazil also expressed disappointment, saying Brazil’s lack of condemnation for Iran’s actions was regrettable.

This is not the first time Lula’s government has criticized Israel. Earlier, Lula accused Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza, which led Israel to declare him persona non grata and ban him from visiting until he apologizes.

Brazil’s position stands out because many Western and Middle Eastern countries condemned Iran’s missile attacks on Israel. Critics say Lula’s approach damages Brazil’s reputation and weakens its ties with democratic countries.

The conflict between Israel and Iran is not just about politics. When violence erupts in the Middle East, it can disrupt oil supplies and trade routes, making goods more expensive and affecting economies worldwide.

As a major trading nation, Brazil depends on stable global markets. Lula’s handling of the crisis has left many Brazilians and international partners questioning where Brazil stands.

The government’s choice to criticize Israel while staying silent on Iran’s missile attacks has led to accusations that Brazil is siding with Iran, costing it support both at home and abroad.
