The Continent’s Mood Today

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake tore through Colombia’s coffee belt yesterday morning, a tragedy so fierce its tremors were felt from Panama to Venezuela.

While rescue crews dig through rubble in Chocó and Valle del Cauca, the rest of the continent processes the shock alongside its own domestic stories—record oil profits, fractious politics, and the quiet hum of cultural life trying to carry on.

Colombia – Grief and a Government’s First Trial

The earth shook for what felt like an eternity at 7:34 a.m. on Monday. The Servicio Geológico Colombiano confirmed a 7.4-magnitude quake with an epicentre in San José del Palmar, Chocó, making it the strongest in the 21st century.

By nightfall, authorities reported more than 130 dead and 570 injured nationwide, with 188 people missing in Valle del Cauca alone. The mayors of Cali and Pereira scrambled as 61 buildings collapsed and at least six regional airports suffered damage, grounding emergency flights.

The session read
The Ibovespa eased 0.19%, with breadth positive — 4 of 5 names higher. MERVAL led, while IPC MEX lagged.

Argentina – Record Profits, Vanishing Jobs

YPF reported a staggering US$1.205 billion profit in the second quarter, the second-highest in its history, fuelling the government’s narrative of an energy renaissance.

The state-backed firm immediately sold its Metrogas stake to Edenor for US$780 million, exiting the distribution business to double down on Vaca Muerta. “We are accelerating investment in the second half,” the company signalled, as Clarín splashed the numbers.

Chile – A Hardline Pen and Coalition Doubts

President José Antonio Kast signed a constitutional reform bill to enshrine public security as a duty of the State, fulfilling a core campaign promise.

La Tercera detailed the ceremony, noting that it provoked “desmarques” or defections from allies who fear the reform is too broad. The president called for an “acotada” or limited change to the Magna Carta, but sceptics inside his sector want to see the fine print.

Brazil – The Transactional Pause

President Lula da Silva is embroiled in a stimulus fight, courting Congressional allies to pass an election-year spending package that is spooking fiscal hawks.

InfoMoney leads with Caixa Seguridade’s solid 9.5% profit jump, while a darker story simmers: the Voepass airline president claims he didn’t know about technical failures preceding a recent deadly crash, a case the Federal Police insist he understood perfectly.

Mexico – Seismic Anxiety and Silent Investment

The 7.4 Colombian quake triggered deep anxiety here. El Financiero immediately placed it in the context of the ‘Cinturón de Fuego del Pacífico’, the Ring of Fire that also threatens Mexico’s coast.

Yet the country’s own violence is closer to home. Infobae reported a young man executed by gunfire on the streets of Colonia Morelos in Mexico City’s Venustiano Carranza borough, a sharp reminder of the chronic insecurity.

The Shared Mood

From the rubble of Colombia to the trading floors of Buenos Aires, Latin America is living its oldest story: deep tragedy sitting next to stubborn vitality. There is no continental pause for grief—the markets don’t stop, the campaign rallies continue, and the flights are being re-routed. The peculiar loneliness of disaster in the Americas is that it’s often a neighbour’s tragedy watched on a screen, a ‘there but for the grace of God’ shrug followed by a check of one’s own portfolio.

Frequently Asked Questions

How strong was the Colombia earthquake and where did it hit?

The Servicio Geológico Colombiano reported it as a 7.4 magnitude, the strongest this century. It struck at 7:34 a.m. with an epicentre in San José del Palmar, Chocó, and was felt in Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, and across the Pacific Ring of Fire.

What is the political impact on Chile of Kast’s security reform?

President Kast signed the reform bill to make public security a constitutional duty of the State, but his own coalition allies have expressed immediate doubts. They insist the modification must be limited in scope to avoid an overreach.

Is Argentina’s economy improving despite the jobs crisis?

It’s a mixed picture. YPF posted its second-highest quarterly profit ever at US$1.2 billion, though country risk rose to 465 basis points, its highest in two months. However, formal employment is shrinking sharply, and former officials warn consumer debt defaults are becoming a serious problem.
