General Strike Shuts Down Argentina’s Transportation and Services

On Thursday, the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) initiated a 24-hour nationwide strike against President Javier Milei’s government.

This comprehensive stoppage will also impact air travel, as pilots have voiced their support for the movement.

Aerolíneas Argentinas has suspended all flights for the day, affecting over 700 flights and an estimated 90,000 passengers.

As reported by Clarín, 45 airlines, which comprise 80% of Argentina’s daily air traffic, will halt operations entirely.

However, Flybondi, a low-cost airline operating from Ezeiza International Airport, and American Airlines plan to offer limited services.

Altogether, 145 transportation companies are expected to back the strike. The work stoppage will commence at midnight and end at 11:59 p.m.

This nationwide protest is the second general strike under Milei’s administration. The first, held on January 24, lasted for 12 hours.

The public services, commerce, banking, and healthcare sectors will also experience disruptions.

The banking employees’ union criticized Milei’s stringent economic policies, arguing they harm workers while benefiting influential economic groups.

Despite this solidarity, the involvement of commerce and service workers is anticipated to be partial, resulting in the closure of malls and supermarkets while keeping pharmacies functional.

Security Minister Patricia Bullrich announced measures to maintain order and ensure free movement throughout the day.

She emphasized that authorities will not allow blockades on roads and bridges, and will keep strict protocols in place to safeguard public safety during the protest.
