Alcione, Saturday

Alcione plays the Teatro Positivo on Saturday 22 August. The show starts at 9.15pm and the doors open an hour earlier, at 8.15pm.

The tour is billed as Tour de sucessos, a run through the hits. Alcione has been a fixture of Brazilian samba since the 1970s, and is known across the country as A Marrom.

Tickets run from R$120 to R$700 depending on the sector, about US$23 to US$135. The rate used is R$5.2012 to the dollar, quoted on 17 August.

The theatre is at Rua Professor Pedro Viriato Parigot de Souza 5300, in Campo Comprido, west of the centre.

A Saturday-night samba show at a 2,400-seat theatre is not a small thing in Curitiba. The upper sectors are the ones that go first.

She has recorded for five decades and still tours hard. The Curitiba date is one stop on a long run.

Led Zeppelin at the Guairão, Thursday

Led Zeppelin Legends in Concert runs on Thursday 20 August at 9pm, on the stage of the Guairão. That is the Auditório Bento Munhoz da Rocha Netto, the main hall of the Teatro Guaíra complex.

The billing is Edu Curti with band and orchestra, which is the orchestral-tribute format rather than a straight covers night.

Ticket prices have not been published. Tickets are available through Disk Ingressos and at the Teatro Guaíra box office.

One caution worth stating: some automated listings have placed this show in Asunción, Paraguay. It is in Curitiba.

The Guairão is the largest theatre in southern Brazil. An orchestra fits its stage in a way most tribute venues cannot manage.

A film festival with two days left

The V Mostra Curitiba de Cinema runs to Wednesday 19 August, with its closing session listed at 9.30pm.

If you have not been, this week is the whole of what is left of it.

The festival ran from 14 August. Wednesday’s session is the last on the published programme.

Why Curitiba rewards a slow week

Curitiba is not a city that shouts about its culture, and that is part of the appeal. The programme runs steadily rather than in bursts.

For anyone with a free evening, the theatres sit close together. Tickets rarely sell out on the day, which is not true of Rio or São Paulo.

Where these venues are

The Teatro Guaíra sits in central Curitiba, walkable from most central hotels. It is close to the Rua das Flores pedestrian strip.

The Teatro Positivo is further out, in Campo Comprido on the university campus. Allow for a taxi or a ride-hailing trip rather than a walk.

Campo Comprido is about twenty minutes from the centre outside rush hour. Budget more if you are going straight from work.

Buying tickets as a visitor

Disk Ingressos is the platform most Curitiba venues use. It is the regional equivalent of the national sellers, and it works with a foreign card.

Brazilian venues offer a half-price ticket, meia-entrada, to certain groups. Who qualifies is set at the point of sale, so read the categories before choosing.

Bring identification. Brazilian venues check it at the door, and the half-price categories require proof.

Card payment is standard at both theatres. Cash is not needed for tickets bought at the door.

What we could not confirm

No price grid has been published for the Led Zeppelin night, either by sector or as a range.

A free circus programme has been mentioned for the city this week. No dates or venues were attached to it, so it is not listed here.
