Cuba, interested in the participation of the EEU in its social and economic development

Cuba is interested in the participation of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) in the social and economic development of Cuba, declared the Cuban Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, when participating virtually in the session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council that takes place in Yerevan on October 20 and 21.

“We reaffirm that, for Cuba, it is of great interest that the countries of the Union participate in our economic and social development in the short, medium and long terms in line with the Economic and Social Development Plan until 2030 and the Economic and Social Strategy to boost the economy and confront the global crisis generated by COVID-19,” said Marrero.

He specified that the sectors of common interest include, above all, the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons; energy, especially renewable sources; The tourism; the Agriculture; transportation and the iron and steel industry.

“Because of its importance and progress, we highlight the perspectives that cooperation in the sphere of health and biotechnology has for strengthening our relations, a sector that we identify as a priority for both parties,” added the Cuban Prime Minister.

In particular, Marrero recalled that Belarus has been the first European country to register the Cuban Soberana Plus and Soberana 02 anticovid vaccines, which opens up a great opportunity to promote economic and trade relations not only with Minsk, but also with the entire UEE.

He also welcomed the systematic exchanges between Cuba’s Mariel Special Development Zone and the Eurasian Economic Commission, with a view to establishing an industrial park of the UEE in this zone. In addition, he stressed that there is ample potential throughout the island, especially in ZED Mariel itself, which can be used by the countries of the Union for the development of projects with foreign investment in different sectors.

Marrero thanked the member countries of the UEE for their support in the fight against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States, and invited them to the 38th Havana International Fair – the most important general trade exchange of Cuba – which will be held from November 14 to 18.

For his part, he reaffirmed Cuba’s will, “as an Observer State, to contribute to the materialization of the purposes of the Eurasian Economic Union, and to consolidate the impact and influence of this organization at the international level.”

Since December 11, 2020, Cuba has the status of Observer State of the UEE, which is made up of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia; while Uzbekistan, Moldova, also participate as observer countries.
