Covid-19: Brazil Reaches 2.8 Million Cases; 70.3 Percent Have Recovered (August 4th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Since the start of the pandemic, 2,801,921 Brazilians have been infected with the virus. The total number of deaths now stands at 95,819. There are 3,600 deaths under investigation.

In the past 24 hours, 51,603 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 1,154 deaths related to the novel coronavirus pandemic have been recorded.

The figures are included in yesterday’s daily balance, August 4th, released by the Ministry of Health.

According to the Ministry, 1,970,767 people have recovered from Covid-19 and 735,335 patients are still under follow-up.

The lethality rate (number of deaths by the total number of cases) stood at 3.4 percent. The mortality rate (number of deaths per 100,000 inhabitants) reached 45.6. The incidence of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants stands at 1,333.3.

On Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays, the daily records tend to be lower due to the challenge in feeding databanks by the municipal and state Secretariats.

On Tuesdays, the figure is typically higher due to the updating of cases accumulated over the weekends.

Brazil ranks second in the world in terms of cases and deaths related to the pandemic. The United States is in the lead. According to the Johns Hopkins University map, the US counts 156,426 deaths and 4,758,028 accumulated cases.

Covid-19 in the states

The states with the highest figures for Covid-19 deaths are São Paulo (23,702), Rio de Janeiro (13,715), Ceará (7,806), Pernambuco (6,717), and Pará (5,799).

The states with the lowest number of deaths from the pandemic are Tocantins (408), Mato Grosso do Sul (432), Roraima (528), Acre (545), and Amapá (581).

Mato Grosso do Sul, which remained the least lethal location throughout the pandemic, lost its position to Tocantins, which now ranks last (408).

In terms of Covid-19 cases, São Paulo leads (575,589), followed by Ceará (179,341), Bahia (175,389), Rio de Janeiro (168,911), and Pará (158,277). Bahia overtook Rio de Janeiro in the third position.

The states with the fewest infections to date are thinly populated Amapá (36,999), Roraima (33,194), Mato Grosso do Sul (27,678), Tocantins (27,664), and Acre (20,708).

Acre regained its position as the state with fewest cases. In recent weeks, this position had been taken by Mato Grosso do Sul.
