Colombia’s Largest Gas Find Shows Strong Results in Petrobras Test

Brazilian energy giant Petrobras announced today that a drill stem test at the Sirius-2 well offshore Colombia has confirmed “good productivity” of natural gas. The test evaluated approximately 100 meters of reservoir interval in deep waters of the Guajira Basin.

Technicians collected samples during the test for detailed laboratory analysis. These preliminary results strengthen earlier assessments of substantial gas potential in the region. The consortium will continue evaluating data from both Sirius-1 and Sirius-2 wells according to contractual obligations.

The Sirius-2 well sits 31 kilometers off the Colombian coast at a water depth of 804 meters. Petrobras operates the project through its subsidiary with a 44.44% stake, while Colombian state oil company Ecopetrol holds the majority 55.56% share.

Both companies declared this discovery in December 2024 as the largest gas find in Colombia’s history. Technical assessments confirmed gas volumes exceeding 6 trillion cubic feet in place. This discovery could potentially triple Colombia‘s existing gas reserves.

The partners plan an innovative “subsea to shore” development approach using four producing wells. They expect production of approximately 13 million cubic meters daily over a 10-year period. Production could begin as early as 2027 if environmental approvals move forward and commercial viability is confirmed.

Petrobras and Colombia Partner on $4.1 Billion Gas Project

Total investment for the project reaches $4.1 billion. The consortium allocated $1.2 billion for the exploratory phase and $2.9 billion for production development. Petrobras included its share of these investments in its 2025-2029 Business Plan.

The development requires substantial infrastructure investment. Plans include installation of subsea production systems and a pipeline to transport gas to an onshore treatment facility. The partners have started gathering essential oceanic and geophysical data to support these installations.

This discovery aligns with Petrobras‘s long-term strategy of replenishing oil and gas reserves. The company aims to explore new frontiers through strategic partnerships while maintaining safety standards. Simultaneously, the project addresses Colombia’s energy security concerns by potentially reducing future import needs.

Both companies have started social-environmental assessments and licensing procedures required to bring the gas to market. The successful development of Sirius represents a significant opportunity for Colombia’s energy future.
