Colombian Stocks Retreat as Fiscal Concerns Overshadow Agricultural Growth
Colombia’s stock market closed lower on July 23, as investors weighed strong agricultural performance against increasing fiscal uncertainty.
According to official economic reports, agriculture grew notably by 7.1% in the first quarter, driven by a 26.7% annual surge in agricultural exports, especially coffee, up nearly 33%.
Despite these positive economic signals, investors remained cautious. The MSCI COLCAP index closed down 0.66%, finishing at approximately 1,716 points.
The weakening was partly driven by broader regional market trends and global investor nervousness. Top performers included ISA, rising 2.01% to close near COP 20,260, and BVC gaining 0.83%, reaching about COP 12,180.
Grupo Cibest also edged up slightly by 0.53%, ending around COP 52,800. On the downside, Grupo Bolívar fell 1.80%, finishing at COP 69,700, while Corporación Financiera Colombiana lost 1.23%, closing at COP 17,700.
Bancolombia preferred shares also dipped 1.07%, ending at COP 44,520, reflecting investor uncertainty about financial stability. Technical analysis revealed important signals from common indicators.

On the daily chart, the COLCAP index faced resistance at the upper Bollinger Band, indicating potential reversal pressure. RSI dropped from around 62 to 59, signaling weakening momentum.
On the 4-hour chart, MACD crossed into negative territory, showing short-term bearishness. Prices approached the 20-period EMA support near 1,713 to 1,716 points, a critical short-term level. If this support breaks, further downside could occur.
The Global Liquidity Index (yellow line) showed declining liquidity, suggesting less available capital in global markets. This liquidity decline likely amplified selling pressure in Colombian equities.
From a longer-term weekly perspective, the upward trend remains stable, supported by a steady, multi-month trendline. However, ongoing fiscal challenges, with public debt now 63.8% of GDP, complicate the outlook.
Investors remain concerned about fiscal deficits running near 7.1% of GDP, exceeding the official fiscal target of 55%. This issue overshadows recent inflation moderation to 4.8% and stable interest rates at 9.25%.
Global markets added pressure, notably from the United States, where uncertainty about Federal Reserve policy intensified investor caution. Commodity-linked stocks suffered slightly due to lower oil prices, though regional agricultural strength limited broader losses.
The current cautious tone in Colombia reflects deepening investor uncertainty over fiscal policy, despite agricultural strength providing economic resilience.
