The Colombian stock market demonstrated notable strength Tuesday as the MSCI COLCAP index gained 0.27% to close at 1,662.69 points. This positive performance came despite downward pressure in major global markets following Moody’s downgrade of U.S. sovereign debt.

Trading volumes remained moderate with the index fluctuating between 1,648.19 and 1,658.24 during the session. The day’s performance extends the Colombian market’s impressive 20.52% gain since the beginning of 2025, significantly outpacing many regional peers.

Organizacion Terpel SA led the day’s winners with a 2.00% climb to 12,240.00 pesos. Cementos Argos SA followed with a 1.72% increase to 10,660.00 pesos, while Grupo de Inversiones Suramericana SA rose 1.56% to 45,500.00 pesos, reaching a new 52-week high.

The session’s biggest declines came from banking stocks. Bancolombia Pf fell sharply by 3.82% to 42,800.00 pesos, followed by Bancolombia SA with a 2.84% drop to 51,300.00 pesos.

Grupo Aval Acciones y Valores SA Pref rounded out the top losers with a 2.51% decline to 583.00 pesos. Sector performance showed significant divergence.

Consumer Discretionary stocks surged 7.60% while Energy gained 5.23%. Financial stocks added 1.70% despite individual banking losses. Materials fell 2.34% and Utilities declined 1.56%.

The Colombian market’s resilience stands in stark contrast to U.S. markets, where the S&P 500 fell 0.39% to 5,940.46, breaking a six-day winning streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.27% to 42,677.24, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.38% to 19,142.71.

Technical analysis of the COLCAP chart reveals strong bullish momentum. The index trades comfortably above both its 50-day moving average (1,636.59) and 200-day moving average (1,620.82), confirming the uptrend’s strength.

The recent breakthrough of the 1,660 resistance level signals potential for further gains. Bollinger Bands show the index trading in the middle of the range between 1,691.32 (upper band) and 1,600.00 (lower band), suggesting room for movement in either direction.

The 9-day EMA (1,665.32) sits above the 21-day EMA (1,664.13), maintaining a bullish signal. The Colombian market’s P/E ratio stands at 8.27, significantly lower than the global average of 22.10 and emerging markets average of 14.28.

This valuation suggests Colombian equities may offer better value compared to global peers. Looking ahead, Trading Economics forecasts the COLCAP to trade at 1,627.32 points by quarter-end and 1,569.84 in 12 months.

The Colombian peso closed at 4,173.25 against the U.S. dollar, showing relative stability despite global market fluctuations. The market’s continued strength reflects investor confidence in Colombian equities.

This comes despite broader global economic uncertainties and upcoming political transitions. The S&P MERVAL Index closed at 2,378,464.00 points on May 21, 2025, gaining 0.38% (8,958.75 points) from the previous day’s close.

This modest uptick builds on Monday’s stronger 2.21% rally, which was fueled by President Javier Milei’s electoral victory in Buenos Aires. Despite recent gains, the benchmark remains down 6.12% year-to-date from its January peak of 2,867,774.50.

Market sentiment continues to improve as Milei’s economic reforms gain traction. The weekend electoral results exceeded pollsters’ expectations and validated the president’s austerity measures.

This political development has renewed investor confidence in Argentina’s economic direction. The materials sector led sectoral gains with a 13.81% increase, boosted by the government’s approval of major mining projects.

Other strong performers included industrials (11.04%) and utilities (10.48%), while consumer discretionary lagged with just 0.89% growth. Among individual stocks, Transportadora de Gas del Sur (TGSU2) topped the gainers list with a 9.8% surge to AR$7,400 per share.

Ternium Argentina (TXAR) followed with a 12.8% jump to AR$643, though it remains down 33.4% year-over-year. Telecom Argentina (TECO2) rose 7.9% to AR$2,660, while energy giant YPF added 4.4% to reach AR$43,000. Banco Macro rounded out the top performers with a 4.4% gain to AR$11,200.

Technical analysis shows the MERVAL has broken above its 50-day moving average, signaling positive short-term momentum. The index now trades above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, confirming the bullish trend reversal.

Bollinger Bands have narrowed, indicating decreasing volatility compared to April’s turbulence. The RSI has moved from oversold territory in late April to neutral levels now, suggesting room for further upside.

Volume patterns show increasing participation on up days, validating the recent rally. Support levels have formed around 2,270,000, with resistance near 2,382,000.

Argentina’s economic fundamentals continue to improve. Analysts project 6.4% economic growth for March, marking the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year expansion. Inflation, while still high at 47.3% in April, has decreased significantly from March’s 55.9%.

The market’s valuation metrics have also normalized, with the P/E ratio at 14.9x, up from April’s 13.7x but well below January’s frothy 24.5x. Market capitalization has recovered to AR$91.9 trillion, reflecting growing investor confidence.

Foreign investment continues to flow into Argentine equities. The Global X MSCI Argentina ETF has seen substantial inflows, with assets increasing roughly seven-fold since Milei took office.

The lifting of capital controls in April, following a $20 billion IMF agreement, has positioned Argentina as a potential bright spot among emerging markets despite global economic uncertainties.
