Colombia Stocks Retreat After Rally as Volatility Rises and Profits Taken

Colombia’s stock market struggled to maintain its recent rally as volatility returned to the COLCAP index on July 29, 2025, according to price data and official charts from TradingView.

After reaching a five-year high, the index retreated by 0.26%, as investors chose caution after the steep gains of the day before. Traders pushed both volume and prices higher during the previous session, but profit-taking quickly replaced euphoria.

Grupo Argos and its preferred shares became the top underperformers, plunging over 30% each. Grupo Inversiones Suramericana dropped more than 15%.

These sharp moves resulted from sector rotations and heightened uncertainty around corporate restructurings. ISA, Grupo Nutresa, and Grupo Bolivar held up as the top gainers, posting modest single-digit increases.

Technical signals reflected this shift in market mood. The one-day chart showed the COLCAP climbing sharply above its previous resistance at 1,752, but the index reversed as the day ended.

The Relative Strength Index stayed near overbought levels, then began to ease back, suggesting the market had gotten ahead of itself. Bollinger Bands widened, indicating increased volatility.

The MACD approached a crossover, pointing to fading positive momentum. Both daily and four-hour moving averages still sloped upward, confirming longer-term buyer interest, but signs of short-term fatigue appeared.

The four-hour chart provided further evidence of weakness. After the sharp rally, momentum indicators signaled a cooling phase with the RSI and MACD both leveling off.

The uptrend from June remains clear on the weekly chart, but after such a rapid advance, any break below 1,710 could see further declines. The Global Liquidity Index NDQ, the yellow line on the charts, displayed erratic movements and ultimately trended lower as the market sold off.

This signal hints at weaker international flows into Colombian assets and diminished risk appetite, both of which can pressure prices in the near term. Looking beyond Colombia, global markets painted a mixed picture.

The U.S. equity market fluctuated as investors awaited policy decisions from the Federal Reserve and reacted to rising Treasury yields. European stocks slipped after a short-lived rebound, caught between geopolitical uncertainties and profit-taking.

Chinese equities attracted modest inflows, but broader Latin American markets experienced outflows, echoing cautious behavior seen in Colombia. Volumes in Bogotá dropped after the peak, confirming that much of the recent buying was event-driven and susceptible to reversal.

ETF flow data tracked by official fund providers also showed some outflows after several days of inflows, a sign that global investors became wary at elevated valuations.

The story behind these numbers is one of investors locking in profits after a historic run-up, mindful of both local and international risks.

This retracement highlights the market’s sensitivity to external sentiment and domestic realities, setting the stage for a more contested trend in the coming sessions.
