Key Facts

  • The COLCAP rose 0.24% to 2,350.44, extending its cautious recovery in a session dominated by a stronger peso and firm crude prices.
  • The Colombian peso leapt 0.83% against the dollar to 3,181, putting it within striking distance of its 52-week high and marking one of its strongest sessions in weeks.
  • Oil, Colombia’s macroeconomic anchor, provided the day’s core logic, though local equities struggled for direction amid thin turnover and legacy energy-sector uncertainty.
  • Trading volumes were concentrated in a handful of names, with turnover thin across the board. The clearer read came from New York, where Colombia’s biggest companies carry liquid dollar listings: Ecopetrol’s ADR jumped 6.16% and Bancolombia’s edged up 0.12%, while Grupo Aval’s fell 3.58%.
  • Regional markets were mixed, with Chile’s IPSA jumping 1.05% while Brazil’s Ibovespa fell 1.23%, leaving the Andean bloc as a relative outperformer.

Today’s Focus

Colombia’s equity benchmark notched a modest gain on Thursday, but the real story was in the currency market. The peso charged higher by nearly 1% against the dollar, reversing weeks of pressure and reflecting renewed appetite for carry returns and oil-linked receipts.

The COLCAP’s advance was narrow, with no single domestic stock generating meaningful turnover above US million. The clearer signal came from New York: Ecopetrol’s ADR (NYSE: EC) surged 6.16%, its strongest session in months, as investors reread the oil story behind the benchmark.

Beneath the surface, the market digested news that Gran Tierra Energy became the eighth oil company to exit Colombia, selling its entire local and Ecuadorian portfolio for US$1.33 billion. While the deal underscores long-term regulatory friction, crude benchmarks held firm on the day, cushioning the blow.

What matters today. The peso’s 0.83% rally dominated a quiet equity session, with oil prices offering a fragile floor for local assets even as foreign producers vote with their feet.

01 The session in one read

Colombia’s COLCAP index — the basket of the country’s most liquid shares on the Bolsa de Valores de Colombia — added 0.24% on Thursday to close at 2,350.44. The gain was modest but directionally consistent with a session where buyers edged in cautiously, cheered by a firm crude market and a currency that outran every major Latin American peer.

The real action was in the foreign-exchange market. The Colombian peso strengthened 0.83% to 3,181 per US dollar, a standout move in a region where the Brazilian real and Mexican peso barely budged. At that level, the peso sits just 1.9% above its 52-week strongest point of 3,122, a sign that offshore funds are warming to local short-term paper.

Underpinning the mood, global crude prices held above recent troughs even as Gran Tierra Energy announced a full exit from Colombia and Ecuador. The US$1.33 billion sale to France’s Maurel & Prom is the eighth such departure, yet the market treated it as an isolated corporate story rather than a systemic warning, at least for now.

Trading on the equity side was thin. Turnover in Bogota was too thin for any single line to set the tone, at roughly US million on the most active names. Among the domestic blue chips that normally dominate — Ecopetrol, Bancolombia, ISA — the session was a holding pattern, with no name swinging more than a fraction of a per cent.

Assessment — Stable but unconvincing MEDIUM

The combination of a rising peso and a barely positive COLCAP paints a picture of a market supported by external tailwinds rather than domestic conviction. The currency’s strength suggests foreign capital is creeping back into local TES bonds after their post-election yield spike, but equity volumes remain too low to signal genuine confidence in Colombian risk. The variable to watch is whether oil can hold its recent floor into next week’s local inflation data — a print above expectations would quickly test the peso’s newfound composure.

02 The day’s numbers

Measure Level Change Read
COLCAP 2,350.44 +0.24% narrow gain on thin volumes
USD/COP 3,181.00 −0.83% peso at strongest since the May sell-off
USD/COP 52-week range 3,122 – 4,053 peso within 1.9% of its one-year high
Key technical level 2,400 psychologically important resistance for the COLCAP

A live market board showing the exact prices for the Colombian session can be found above this section. The figures here are curated from the close — the board contains the full intraday sweep.

The peso’s 0.83% drop in the dollar pair means one dollar buys fewer Colombian pesos, a sign of currency strength that has pushed the exchange rate toward the lower end of its one-year band. That 52-week band stretches from a strong 3,122 to a crisis-era 4,053, and at 3,181 the peso has now retraced more than 21% of its weakest point.

The session read
The MSCI COLCAP rose 0.24%, with breadth negative — 4 of 9 names higher. Energy led, while Industrials lagged.

03 Why it moved — crude floor meets local exit

Oil is Colombia’s macroeconomic centre of gravity — it funds a significant slice of the government’s external revenue and shapes the peso’s fortunes. On Thursday, global benchmarks were stable enough to keep sellers at bay, even as headlines confirmed that Gran Tierra Energy had agreed to sell all its Colombian and Ecuadorian assets to Maurel & Prom for US$1.33 billion.

Gran Tierra’s departure makes it the eighth international oil company to leave Colombian territory in recent years, adding to a list that already includes heavyweights who have scaled back or exited over regulatory and security concerns. The local media covered the deal extensively, framing it as further evidence that the energy sector’s profile in the country is shrinking.

Yet the equity market’s response was notably composed. Ecopetrol, the state-controlled oil producer that is the single largest weight in the COLCAP, did not stage a dramatic move in either direction. That calm suggests investors had already priced in a gradual thinning of the foreign upstream presence and are now looking instead at the global crude curve for their next cue.

On the currency side, the peso’s rally drew additional support from a domestic bond market that has stabilised sharply since the presidential election. Local one-year TES yields have fallen by 123 basis points from their mid-May peak of 13.9%, according to La República, a powerful signal that institutional money is returning to Colombian fixed income. That bid for pesos to buy bonds almost certainly spilled over into the foreign-exchange market.

04 The day’s movers

Driver Level / Move Change Note
Ecopetrol (NYSE: EC) US.40 +6.16% state oil major; day’s standout on the dollar listing
Bancolombia (NYSE: CIB) US.25 +0.12% largest lender; barely moved
Grupo Aval (NYSE: AVAL) US.11 −3.58% financial holding; the session’s weakest of the three
Ecopetrol (ECO) session was flat to marginally positive; thin flow
Bancolombia (PFBCOLO) no conclusive move in the session scan
ISA (ISA) quiet session for the transmission giant

Because the Bogota tape offers no reliable public feed for individual closes, the table above uses the New York ADRs of Colombia’s three largest listed companies, which track the same businesses in dollars.

None of Colombia’s traditional home-grown heavyweights — Ecopetrol, Bancolombia, Grupo Sura, ISA or Grupo Energía Bogotá — registered a move large enough to appear in the day’s scan. This does not mean they were flat, only that their moves were too small or their turnover too fragmented to break out. In practical terms, the local equity story was one of waiting rather than action.

05 The regional scoreboard

Index Country Change
COLCAP Colombia +0.24%
IPSA Chile +1.05%
BVL Perú Peru +0.81%
IPC Mexico −0.19%
Ibovespa Brazil −1.23%

The live market board above contains the full closes for all five regional indices. Chile’s IPSA led the pack with a 1.05% advance, followed by Peru’s BVL at 0.81%, while Colombia’s COLCAP rounded out the Andean Bloc’s positive day with a slim gain.

At the other end of the spectrum, Brazil’s Ibovespa dropped 1.23%, making it the region’s weakest performer, while Mexico’s IPC slipped 0.19%. The divergence within Latin America was stark — Pacific-facing markets caught a bid related to commodity stability, while Brazil continued to wrestle with its own domestic interest-rate narrative.

06 The technical picture

With the COLCAP at 2,350.44, the benchmark is slowly clawing its way off deeply oversold levels from earlier in the year. The next psychologically important hurdle is 2,400 — a level that, if broken on meaningful volume, would signal the first credible reversal in months.

On the currency chart, the dollar-peso pair’s break below 3,200 is technically significant. The pair is now approaching the 52-week low of 3,122, and a move through that floor would open the door to a rapid retracement toward the 3,000 handle, a level not seen since the early part of the decade.

Traders should note, however, that both the COLCAP advance and the peso rally are occurring on thin participation. A true trend change would require confirmation from local pension funds and foreign institutional desks, which have largely sat out the equity market in recent months.

07 What to watch

  • US payrolls: Friday’s US employment report will set the global rate tone and either validate or unwind the peso’s recent strength.
  • Oil’s floor: Crude’s ability to hold above recent lows is the single most important variable for Colombian assets in the near term.
  • Local CPI next week: A higher-than-expected inflation print could halt the rally in TES bonds and reverse the peso’s carry-trade appeal.
  • Gran Tierra exit: Watch for further corporate departures from Colombia’s energy sector — if the pace accelerates, it will eventually weigh on the COLCAP.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the COLCAP?

It is Colombia’s main stock-market index, tracking the most liquid and valuable companies listed on the Bolsa de Valores de Colombia, including Ecopetrol, Bancolombia and ISA.

Why did the Colombian peso strengthen so much?

A combination of falling local bond yields — which attract foreign money into peso-denominated debt — and steady crude oil prices gave the currency a strong bid on August 6.

Was the Gran Tierra sale a big deal for the market?

Yes and no. It marks the eighth foreign oil-company exit from Colombia, which is worrying long-term. But on the day, crude prices held firm and Ecopetrol shares were steady, so the market treated it as old news.

Why does this report use New York listings?

Colombia’s three largest listed companies also trade in New York as ADRs, and those closes are publicly verifiable where individual Bogota prints are not. The ADRs move with both the share price and the peso, so a 0.83% currency gain lifts them independently of any change in the business.
