Brazil’s B3 Holds Steady as Investors Weigh Policy Headwinds and Global Uncertainty
Brazil’s main stock index, the Ibovespa, closed at 138,716.64 on June 18, 2025, slipping 0.09% from the previous session, according to official B3 data and TradingView charts.
The session’s narrow range reflected investor caution as the market digested both domestic monetary policy signals and global economic data. The day’s trading followed a period of heightened risk aversion.
On June 17, the index had dropped 0.30%, pressured by global geopolitical tensions and commodity volatility, especially after reports of possible US involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict.
Investors also kept a close watch on the Brazilian real, which hovered near R$5.50 per US dollar, reflecting ongoing fiscal and currency pressures. Within the Ibovespa, sector performance diverged sharply.
Embraer led the winners, rising nearly 4%, as investors responded to robust order flows and a favorable industry outlook. Minerva and BRF, both in the protein sector, gained on improved export prospects.

On the downside, Raizen fell over 4%, hit by weak energy prices and sector rotation, while Grupo Vamos and Cogna lost more than 3% each, reflecting concerns about logistics and education sector margins.
These moves aligned with steady but cautious trading volumes, as market participants awaited key policy signals. Technical analysis of the daily and four-hour charts reveals a market in consolidation.
Ibovespa Holds Uptrend but Lacks Momentum
The Ibovespa traded above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, signaling the longer-term uptrend remains intact, but momentum has faded.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) hovered near 58 on the daily and 56 on the four-hour chart, both below overbought territory, suggesting limited immediate upside.
The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator showed a flat to slightly positive histogram, indicating weak momentum and a lack of clear direction. Bollinger Bands narrowed, reflecting reduced volatility and a wait-and-see stance among traders.
Globally, peers in the US and Europe also saw muted sessions. US markets closed flat as the Federal Reserve held rates steady, while European stocks edged lower ahead of central bank guidance and amid persistent Middle East tensions.
These external factors, combined with Brazil’s own fiscal and monetary challenges, shaped a risk-averse mood on B3. Fundamentals remain mixed.
Brazil’s central bank faces pressure to balance inflation control with growth, as the Selic rate stands at 15% and inflation expectations remain above target. Fiscal concerns persist, with a projected 2025 deficit of R$104 billion and public debt at 76.2% of GDP.
These factors weigh on investor sentiment and keep the real under pressure. Compared to global peers, the Ibovespa has outperformed over the year, rising more than 16% from its January lows.
However, recent sessions show a market struggling for direction as global and domestic risks converge. Investors continue to seek clarity on policy and external demand before committing to new positions.
