The US government plans to impose a 50% tariff on many goods from Brazil, starting August 1, 2025. This move could cost Brazilian industries—especially mining and manufacturing—about $1 billion a year if Brazil retaliates with its own tariffs.

The acting US ambassador in Brazil, Gabriel Escobar, has advised Brazil’s business delegation to delay its planned visit to the US until September.

According to Escobar, August is a holiday month when few American officials and industry leaders are available, making serious negotiations difficult.

Brazil exports only a small share—about 3.5%—of its minerals to the US, but it depends on the US for 20% of its mining equipment, including big trucks and excavators.

If both countries apply new tariffs, importing this critical machinery could become much more expensive. This may slow down Brazilian production, raise costs, and threaten jobs.

Some mining operations in Brazil almost fully rely on US-made machines, so quick action is needed. US and Brazilian officials still view trade in minerals as strategic.

The US wants to strengthen ties with Brazil to access minerals like nickel and niobium, as these are vital for technology and national security. Both sides recognize these materials are becoming even more important as global supply chains shift away from China.

For now, with the tariffs about to start and serious talks only likely in September, businesses on both sides face uncertainty and mounting costs.

The story shows how fast-changing trade rules can shake up industries, affect jobs, and disrupt prices in both countries. Everyone involved is working to avoid long-term damage, but time is running short.
