RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In Brazil, 357,294 new companies were opened in March. The figure is a record for the month since Serasa Experian began its historical ‘Enterprise Birth Indicator’ series in 2010. Of the total number of businesses opened, 271,575 were MEIs (individual microentrepreneurs), a decrease of 3.8% compared to the same month last year.

The total number of business openings increased by 1.6% compared to March 2021. Limited liability companies were the highlight, increasing by 44.5% from 45,145 in 2021 to 65,220 in 2022.

The services sector recorded the highest number of business startups. In March, there were 248,434 companies. High of 3.4% compared to the same month in 2021.

It was followed by trade, with 80,017 new companies, and industry, with 24,563. Both segments recorded a decrease of 2.3% and 7%, respectively.

The number of companies classified as “other” amounted to 4,280, the only category with significant growth of 32.1%.

For the economist of Serasa Experian, Luiz Rabi, the results show that the population is looking to entrepreneurship as a way to generate income to survive the economic crisis that the world and Brazil are going through.

“We see that it is difficult for people to find a suitable place in the labor market, and faced with this difficulty, they are opting for entrepreneurship,” Rabi says.
