Brazil Records 12 State Capitals in Emergency Status Due to Coronavirus

By · April 14, 2020 · 2 min read

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Of the 27 capitals in Brazil, 12 are already in an emergency situation, due to the number of coronavirus infections on the total population of each of these capitals. Today, the national scenario points to an average incidence of 111 infections for every one million inhabitants.

The Ministry of Health has alerted to the need to maintain social isolation, particularly in the most critical cities, as a means to prevent the collapse of the health system and ensure care for patients who need medical assistance.

However, in 12 capitals, the rate of infections is above this average. This is the case of Fortaleza (573), São Paulo (518), Manaus (482), Macapá (391), Florianópolis (345), Recife (339), São Luiz (302), Rio de Janeiro (297), Vitória (279), Porto Alegre (210), Brasília (204), and Boa Vista (175).

In six other capitals, the situation is one of “attention”: Curitiba (156), Natal (154), Rio Branco (147), Belo Horizonte (141), Salvador (126) and Belém (113). The other nine capitals have an incidence of cases below the national average. This is the case of Cuiabá, João Pessoa, Goiânia, Campo Grande, Aracaju, Palmas, Porto Velho and Maceió.

Considering the mortality rate for coronavirus, five states (Amazonas, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco, and Ceará) are above the national average, which is 6 deaths per one million inhabitants.
