Nine miners buried after coal mine collapse in central Colombia

At least nine miners are trapped after a collapse at a coal mine in a rural area of the Colombian municipality of Lenguazaque. Relief authorities have begun “ventilation and air injection measures.”

“This is an emergency due to the collapse of a mine in Lenguazaque, Cundinamarca. Nine people are trapped.”

“As part of our essential response services, volunteers from the Civil Defense and the Mining Safety and Rescue Group are supporting rescue efforts,” the Colombian Civil Defense announced on its Twitter account.

Firefighters in the department of Cundinamarca reported that “ventilation and aeration maneuvers, material extraction and shoring of the slope” had begun.

Mining authorities have launched an investigation to determine the causes of the collapse of the coal mine.
