Suspicion of murder: German diplomat arrested in Brazil

Brazilian police confirmed Saturday, August 6, the arrest of a German diplomat in Rio de Janeiro.

Uwe Herbert H., who holds the rank of consul at the German consulate in Rio de Janeiro, had informed authorities that his Belgian husband, Walter Henri Maximilien B., had hit his head after falling, police said.

However, examining the body and the couple’s apartment in the exclusive Ipanema neighborhood revealed that Walter Henri Maximilien B. had suffered other blows.

“The consul’s version that the victim suffered a fall is inconsistent with the conclusions of the forensic report,” police officer Camila Lourenço said in a comment posted on social media by Rio de Janeiro’s 14th police station.

“Several bruises, including on the torso, consistent with injuries caused by kicks were found, as well as injuries due to an attack with a cylindrical instrument,” she added.

According to local media, Uwe Herbert H., who had been married to Walter Henri Maximilien B. for twenty-three years, tried to clean up the scene before police arrived, telling officers that his husband had been drinking heavily and taking sleeping pills.
