Brazil: Small businesses generate 72% of job openings in the first semester

Micro and small companies (MSEs) boosted formal job creation in the year’s first half. Of the nearly 1.33 million formal jobs created in Brazil from January to June, 961,200, equivalent to 72.1% of the total, originated in small businesses.

The conclusion is contained in a survey conducted by the Brazilian Micro and Small Company Support Service (Sebrae), based on data from the General Cadastre for Employed and Unemployed (Caged) of the Ministry of the Economy.

The performance of MSEs is much better than that of medium and large companies, which opened 279,100 vacancies in the first six months of 2022.

In June alone, the smallest businesses were responsible for 63.6% of formal job openings, with 176,800 out of 277,900 jobs created last month. Medium and large companies opened 73,900 vacancies (26.6% of the total).

SECTORS

In the breakdown by sectors of the economy, small businesses showed a positive balance in job creation in all segments in the year to date.

The highlight among micro and small companies is the service sector, which generated 533,000 jobs. In June alone, the segment opened 78,000 jobs.

Construction and the transformation industry appear in second and third positions, with 168,800 and 126,300 jobs generated, respectively.

In commerce, MSEs created 90,600 jobs from January to June. On the other hand, medium and large companies closed 42,800 vacancies in the period.
