Brazil negotiates the purchase of fertilizers in Jordan, Egypt and Morocco

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A committee from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) begins a trip to Jordan, Egypt, and Morocco on Friday. The group will meet with representatives of private companies and governments of these three countries to discuss the supply of fertilizers and the expansion of investments in Brazil.

In Jordan, the main topic will be the supply of potassium-based fertilizers. In Egypt, the focus will be on nitrogen-based fertilizers, and in Morocco, on phosphate-based fertilizers. The delegation will return to Brazil on May 14.

MEETINGS

The agenda of the visit to Jordan, which begins tomorrow (7), includes meetings with the boards of directors of critical potash-producing companies such as the Arab Potash Company (APC), which produces more than 2.4 million tons per year, and the Jordan Phosphate Mining Company (JPMC), with a production capacity of more than 7 million tons per year.

Brazilian Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply Marcos Montes will also meet with his Jordanian counterpart Khaled Musa Henefat and Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Youssef Al-Shamal.

On Monday (9), the delegation will arrive in Cairo, where Minister Marcos Montes will meet with Deputy Minister of Agriculture Moustafa El Sayeed and Minister of Supply Aly Al Moselhy. The Map delegation will participate in the Brazil-Egypt Forum: opportunities in bilateral trade, sponsored by the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce.

Meetings are also planned with representatives of the fertilizer and animal protein sectors.

The delegation will arrive in Morocco next Thursday (12). It is scheduled to meet with Minister of Agriculture Mohammed Sadiki and visit the Jorf Lasfar plant of the Office Chérifien des Phosphates Company (OCP). The state-owned company is currently Brazil’s largest supplier of phosphorus.

Morocco is the second-largest phosphate fertilizer producer, accounting for about 17% of world production. In 2021, Brazil imported more than US$1.6 billion worth of fertilizer from Morocco.
