Brazil has 45% corn harvest increase, growth equivalent to Ukraine’s production

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The current corn harvest in Brazil had an increase of 45% compared to the same period in 2021, according to the National Supply Company (Conab). The growth will be almost 30 million tons, representing the entire production of Ukraine.

It is the second harvest of grain in the country. According to Conab, there were 88 million tons. In 2021, 60.7 million tons were harvested. The production will only not be higher because of the weather, which affects the crops.

“The growth of the Brazilian corn crop is practically equivalent to the entire harvest of Ukraine. So, look at the impact this has on Brazil and the world. If we don’t improve world stocks, the balance between supply and demand ends up being affected,” said Sergio de Zen, Conab’s agricultural policy director.

Conab’s total projection is for a national harvest of more than 271 million tons of grains this year. However, the result was negatively impacted by the lack of rain in the Southern states and part of the Midwest.

“Today, we have a reduction, but it is important to say that compared to the 20/21 harvest we had an increase of 6.2%. That is, 15.8 million tons more than last season,” said the president of Conab, Guilherme Ribeiro.

The rice and soy harvests are almost finished. Soy production should be more than 124 million tons, a 10.1% decrease compared to the previous harvest. As for rice, the provision is 10,600 tons, a reduction of 9.9%.

“For beans, I think the news is very positive. Compared to the previous harvest, we have an expansion in the production of beans for this harvest. An expansion of a little more than 6.5%,” explained FGV researcher Felippe Serigati.

In winter crops, which have already started to be planted, the expectation is for a record. Wheat should reach more than 8 million tons.
