Brazil Interest Rates Fall as U.S. Delays Mexico and Canada Tariffs

Brazilian interest rates dropped sharply after the US postponed tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods, triggering the dollar’s 11th consecutive decline against the real.

Valor Data reports the DI January 2026 contract slid to 14.865%, while the 2031 contract plummeted 28.5 basis points to 14.39% as traders priced in softer monetary tightening.

The dollar closed at R$5.8153, its lowest since November 26, marking the longest slide against Brazil’s currency since 2005. Analysts tied the shift to Mexico’s tariff reprieve and renewed confidence in emerging-market currencies.

“The real now moves in lockstep with peers after finding equilibrium,” said Travelex Bank’s Marcos Weigt, noting volatility in currency derivatives rose to 14.4%.

Trump’s tariff reversals eased fears of a global slowdown, with BMO strategists stating his flexibility “offered consolation” to markets. Brazil’s Ibovespa slipped 0.13% to 125,970 points as investors rotated from defensive stocks.

ASA Hedge’s Diego Chumah noted reduced risk premiums, while Kinea’s Rafael Oliveira warned domestic firms like Sabesp face overvaluation risks. US indices fell harder, with the S&P 500 down 1.59%, as two-year Treasury yields rose to 4.259%.

Bond markets signaled concerns that trade tensions could delay Fed rate cuts, though demand surged for long-term debt. “Markets now weigh growth impacts over short-term inflation,” BMO added, highlighting a pivot toward deflationary pressures.

The peso rallied 1.65% against the dollar, while Canada’s currency gained 0.9%, underscoring how tariff delays recalibrated risk appetites. Brazil’s real, no longer an outlier, now mirrors the pragmatic dance of global markets—volatile, self-correcting, and indifferent to political theatrics.
