Brazil is making big moves to secure its energy future. The country’s oil reserves reached a record 16.8 billion barrels in 2024, according to Brazil’s National Agency of Petroleum.

This amount covers about 15 years of Brazil’s current oil needs. The increase gives Brazil more control over its own energy and helps protect against sudden changes in global oil prices.

Brazil uses about 2.57 million barrels of oil each day. But even though it produces a lot of oil, Brazil still imports some crude oil. This happens because many of its refineries are old and can’t process all types of oil produced in the country.

As a result, Brazil exports some of its crude oil and imports lighter oil that its refineries can handle. To fix this, Petrobras, Brazil’s state oil company, is investing nearly $900 million to double the size of its Abreu e Lima Refinery by 2029.

This refinery will soon process up to 260,000 barrels of oil each day. Most of this will become diesel, which is important for trucks and industry. The new equipment will also help produce cleaner diesel fuel that meets modern environmental rules.

Brazil’s Energy Strategy

These changes aim to reduce Brazil’s need to import fuel and make sure the country can meet its own needs, even if global oil supplies are disrupted. This is especially important for the north and northeast regions, which sometimes face fuel shortages.

By growing its oil reserves and updating its refineries, Brazil is taking practical steps to stay strong in a world where energy supplies can be uncertain.

The country’s leaders want to keep energy prices stable and support the economy, using real data and careful planning to guide their decisions.

All the figures and facts in this story come from official sources, making it clear that Brazil’s energy strategy is based on solid information and real progress.
