Brazil among top five countries perceived as most violent, Ipsos survey reveals
A study conducted by Ipsos Institute across 29 countries reveals that Brazil is among the top five nations perceived as highly violent.
In all categories evaluated, Brazil ranked in the first five, surpassing Mexico, Malaysia, and India, with over 23,000 people surveyed.
Sixty percent of Brazilian respondents reported having witnessed or heard about drug dealing near their homes, significantly above the study’s general average.
More than half indicated they had experienced or heard about a robbery in their neighborhood, in contrast to 29% in Colombia.

Brazil also ranked fourth worst globally concerning violence against women, with 63% of respondents stating they had witnessed or known about such crimes in their locality.
Ipsos Institute’s Public Opinion director, Hélio Gastaldi, expressed that the negative results were sadly predictable, attributing them to Brazil’s structural difficulties, such as economic challenges, social issues, poor job quality, and limited access to quality education and healthcare.
When asked about policy priorities, 59% of respondents preferred job creation over combating violence, reflecting the harsh realities they face daily.
Gastaldi notes that this preference indicates people’s more urgent need to meet basic necessities rather than directly combat crime.
