Brazil: A Nation Leaning Toward Crypto Over Traditional Stock Markets

A study commissioned by a Brazilian asset management firm and a U.S. crypto exchange reveals Brazil’s surprising investment shift. More Brazilians now hold cryptocurrencies than stocks, with 15%—or 24 million people—investing in digital assets.

Savings accounts lead as the top choice, attracting 52% of investors, followed by real estate at 31%. Cryptocurrencies rank fifth at 15%, surpassing stocks, bonds (12%), and gold (9%). Meanwhile, 43% of respondents avoid investing entirely.

Crypto’s appeal shines through despite limited knowledge. Over half, 54%, recognize Bitcoin, but two-thirds know only that currency. Ethereum’s Ether trails at 9.2%, while Brazil’s proposed Drex registers at 6%.

Investors access crypto diversely: 15 million use banks, 6 million opt for brokerages or funds, and 3 million choose self-custody wallets. Analysts note Brazil’s preference for volatile assets over stable ones like the dollar, which only 14% hold.

Experts warn that Bitcoin’s touted stability remains unproven, often tracking tech stocks’ wild swings. Still, 20% plan to buy crypto within two years, with 42% of 16- to 24-year-olds showing interest.

Brazil’s Crypto Boom

Younger investors see crypto as diversification, with 32.1% of that age group agreeing, compared to 20.5% of 45- to 59-year-olds. Gender gaps persist, as men dominate at 67.3% of crypto investors, while women hold 32.7%.

Perceptions vary: 45% liken crypto to stocks, and 30% compare it to online betting. Experts stress education’s urgency in this booming market. Brazil’s 24 million crypto investors eclipse its 19.2 million bondholders and 5.3 million stock traders.

Official figures adjust these self-reported numbers, showing 31.5 million registered for bonds, though only 3 million remain active. This trend positions Brazil as a global crypto leader, yet volatility concerns linger.
