Bolsonaro Administration Is Disapproved by 53 Percent of Population – IBOPE Poll

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The IBOPE (Brazilian Institute of Public Opinion and Statistics) released a survey on Friday, commissioned by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), which shows that 53 percent of people do not approve of the way President Jair Bolsonaro governs.

Those who approve add up to 41 percent and six percent did not want to reply. The survey was conducted between December 5th and 8th – before the investigation of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro became known – involving 2,000 people in 127 municipalities.

The error margin is two percentage points plus or minus and the reliability level is 95 percent.

In September, 50 percent of those interviewed disapproved of the president’s way of governing, 44 percent approved of it, and the rate of those who did not reply was the same. In April, the government was disapproved by 40 percent and approved by 51 percent.

The survey also shows fluctuation within the error margin of the approval rates of Jair Bolsonaro’s government. The positive assessment (excellent or good) is 29 percent against 31 percent in September and 35 percent in April. The negative rating (poor or terrible) reached 38 percent in the new survey compared to 34 percent in September and 27 percent in April.

The rate considering the government as average remained at the same level, 31 percent in December compared to 32 percent in September and 31 percent in April. Those who did not wish to reply totaled three percent.

Reliance on the government dropped within the error margin. Forty-one percent of respondents said they trusted the president and 56 percent said they did not.

In September, 42 percent said they trusted him and 55 percent said they did not. In the first survey, in April, 51 percent trusted the president while 45 percent did not.

Public safety has higher approval

Broken down by government areas, all indexes surveyed fluctuated within the error margin. The survey questioned the respondents’ opinions in the areas of interest rates, fighting unemployment, public safety, fighting inflation, fighting hunger and poverty, taxes, environment, health, and education.

Public safety has the highest approval rating.

In December, 50 percent of respondents said they approved the work in this area, while 47 percent disapproved. Those who do not know or did not reply reached three percent. In the previous survey, in September, the rates were similar, 51 percent said they approved, 45 percent disapproved, and four percent either did not know or did not reply.

When asked about taxes, 64 percent of respondents disapproved of the government’s actions, while 30 percent approved and six percent did not know or did not reply. The data is similar to that for September, when 62 percent disapproved, 32 percent approved, and six percent either did not know or did not reply.

The interest rate performance has similar disapproval to that of taxes. Sixty-two percent of respondents disapproved of the government’s performance in this area, 31 percent approved, and seven percent did not know or did not reply.

Again in September, the difference was within the error margin. The disapproval rate reached 61 percent, approval was 31 percent, and eight percent did not know or did not reply.

Health, education, and environment maintain levels

The government’s performance in the area of education fluctuated slightly within the error margin. In December, 51 percent disapprove, 45 percent approve and four percent do not know or do not reply. In the September survey, 52 percent disapproved, 44 percent approved, and three percent did not know or did not reply.

In health, the change was two percentage points, thus within the error margin. The disapproval rose from 58 percent in September to 60 percent in December. Approval changed in the same proportion, from 38 percent in September to 36 percent in December. The rate of respondents who did not know or did not reply rose from three to four percent.

Environment also achieved similar results. In September, 55 percent disapproved, compared to 54 percent in December. Forty percent of respondents approved while six percent did not know or did not reply.

Perspectives and comparison with Temer’s government

Respondents were split on the expectations for the remaining time of the government. The excellent and good rate reached 34 percent, 28 percent average and three percent poor and terrible. Those who did not know or did not reply amounted to six percent.

The rates fluctuated within the error margin compared to the September survey.

That month, 37 percent of respondents said they had good or great prospects, 27 percent said they had average prospects, and 31 percent said they had poor or terrible prospects. The same percentage said they did not know or did not reply.

When compared to former President Michel Temer’s government, 40 percent believe the current government is better than the previous one, 36 percent see it as similar, and 20 percent see it as worse.

The rate also fluctuated within the error margin compared to September. Three months ago, 43 percent of respondents thought the government was better than Temer’s, 33 percent thought it was similar and 20 percent said it was worse than its predecessor’s.
