Bolivia dollar withdrawals take a bigger step from Friday, 14 August 2026. Savers holding US$3,001 to US$5,000 can now collect that money in cash.

What Changes on Friday 14 August

From Friday, 14 August 2026, a new group of savers can withdraw dollars held in Bolivian banks. This is stage two of the central bank’s plan to return dollars it had held back.

Stage two covers accounts holding between US$3,001 and US$5,000. Anyone whose dollar balance falls in that band can now go to their bank and ask for the cash.

The central bank is the Banco Central de Bolivia, known as the BCB. It set the nine-stage schedule and is providing the cash that funds the payouts.

How Bolivia Dollar Withdrawals Work

Bolivia dollar withdrawals are being released in stages, sorted by how much each account holds. The very smallest balances, of US$1,000 or less, were freed first, earlier in 2026.

Stage one opened on 15 July 2026 for balances of US$1,001 to US$3,000. Stage two then follows on Friday, 14 August 2026.

Each later stage lifts the ceiling to a higher band of dollar savings than the one before. Bigger balances wait their turn in the months that follow.

Why the Dollars Were Trapped

For about two years, many people in Bolivia could not pull dollars out of their own bank accounts. The country had simply run short of the hard currency needed to pay for imports.

Bolivia earns fewer dollars than before, mainly because natural gas exports have fallen. Foreign reserves dropped sharply, and banks slowly stopped handing dollars back to account holders.

So dollars sat frozen inside accounts, visible on paper but out of reach. The staged return plan is the government’s way of slowly giving that money back to savers.

The Nine-Stage Timeline to 2027

The schedule runs in ten steps for individual savers, from July 2026 through August 2027. Companies are on a separate schedule that runs to December 2028. Each month of the schedule roughly opens the next balance band up the ladder.

After the US$3,001 to US$5,000 band in August, the US$5,001 to US$8,000 group opens in September 2026. Higher bands then open month by month.

Balances of US$30,001 to US$50,000 are due to open in February 2027. Sums above US$50,000 are paid in monthly instalments from April to July 2027. A final catch-up payment is scheduled for 14 August 2027.

Who Gets Paid, and How

You collect the money from the same bank where your dollar account already sits today. There is no separate office or special window to visit.

The central bank sends cash to those banks so they can pay savers. In the first stage it released US$48 million in cash.

Payment is made in US dollars, in cash, over the counter at the branch. Bring whatever identity documents your own bank asks for when you go to collect.

What This Means for Foreigners

Many foreigners living in Bolivia keep savings in dollars, not local currency. Some found those dollars locked away for months, just like the savings of local residents.

If you are an expat or nomad with a Bolivian dollar account, check your balance band. Your turn to withdraw depends only on how much money you hold in that account.

Smaller savers can already withdraw their dollars, while larger balances unlock later in the yearly cycle. The rules are the same whatever your nationality.

How Much You Can Take Out

In stage two, the band is US$3,001 to US$5,000 of dollar savings. Your place in the withdrawal queue is set entirely by your account balance.

Once your stage opens, reports say you can take all, part, or none of it. You are not forced to empty the account at once.

Officials describe the plan as permanent, not a one-day window that quickly slams shut. That gives savers room to plan around their own needs.

What Savers Should Do Now

First, find out which band your dollar balance falls into. That single fact tells you which month of the schedule your money becomes available.

Then ask your own bank exactly which documents to bring and on what day to come. Branch procedures can differ, so confirm the details in advance.

If your balance band has already opened, there is genuinely no rush to act on the very first day. The money stays yours whether you take it now or later.

The Bigger Picture for Bolivia

The return plan is funded partly by a change to the banks’ legal reserve rules, called the encaje legal. That change took effect in late January 2026.

It is meant to rebuild trust after years of dollar shortages. Confidence in the banks had worn thin during the long squeeze on cash.

The wider dollar shortage has not vanished, and imports and subsidies still strain the country’s reserves. The scheme returns savings without ending the underlying problem.

What to Watch Next

The next balance bands are scheduled to open one after another in the months after August. As of 13 August 2026, no delay to the plan had been announced.

Watch for official notices from the BCB and your own bank. Those notices confirm the exact dates, the documents required, and any change to the published schedule.

Larger balances unlock only later, stretching into 2027, so patience is built into the plan. For now, the smallest savers are the first to be made whole.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can withdraw now?

Savers whose dollar balance falls in an already-open band can withdraw. As of 14 August 2026, that means balances up to US$5,000.

How much can I take out?

Stage two covers dollar savings of US$3,001 to US$5,000. Reports say you may take all, part, or none of it.

When do larger balances unlock?

Bigger bands open through late 2026 and into 2027 by size. Balances of US$30,001 to US$50,000 are due in February 2027.

Is there a catch?

The money is genuinely returned, in cash, at your own bank. But the wider dollar shortage behind the freeze has not gone away.
