Bolivia blockades in 2026 cost the economy billions, but the exact figure depends on who you ask. Here is a clear breakdown of the crisis and its aftermath.

What the Bolivia Blockades Cost

Various international media outlets put cumulative losses at about US$2.3 billion after 50 days. That figure is not tied to a single named estimator in the reports.

The Cámara Nacional de Industrias (CNI), Bolivia’s main industry chamber, estimated losses at over US$3 billion after about 53 days. Another report also says losses exceeded US$3 billion after roughly 53 days.

One local report mentions losses of around 3,000 million bolivianos, about US$300 million. That figure conflicts sharply with the larger estimates, so treat it as one outlier.

No single official number exists. The cost depends on the date and the source, so always check who is counting.

Who Is Blocking, and Why

Labor and peasant organizations carried out the blockades. The COB, Bolivia’s main labor federation, declared a general strike on 1 May 2026.

Road blockades escalated starting 6 May 2026. Protesters demanded wage increases and an end to the fuel and dollar shortage.

Some coverage says sindicatos, or unions, led the blockades and tied them to demands for President Rodrigo Paz’s resignation. Others frame it as a minority acting outside the law.

Evo Morales has been linked to alleged backing of the unrest and faces an arrest order. But do not call his supporters the sole organizers; that link is not fully verified.

A Country Short of Fuel and Dollars

Bolivia faces a persistent shortage of diesel, gasoline, and US dollars. Officials link this to declining gas revenue, falling reserves, and weaker exports.

The Banco Central de Bolivia has been buying and selling dollars directly to ease the shortage. The country ended its fixed-rate system on 29 June 2026.

The parallel dollar rate rose from Bs 9.73 on 29 June 2026 to Bs 11.86 on 6 August 2026. Another report says it hit Bs 11.37 on 26 July 2026.

One report says the dollar passed Bs 12 per US dollar, with banks covering about 88% of demand. That left a shortfall of roughly US$89 million.

President Rodrigo Paz Under Pressure

Rodrigo Paz is Bolivia’s president in August 2026. He says the transformation of Bolivia ‘apenas comenzó’, meaning it has just begun.

He also says the government handled the 53 days of blockades within democracy. Some protesters still demand his resignation.

Business leaders have reacted too. María Cristina ‘Chichi’ Soto, president of CAINCO in El Alto, called for security and legal certainty.

The pressure on Paz is high, but he remains in office. Watch for any new political moves from unions or the opposition.

The Human Toll

The blockades lasted more than seven weeks. They deprived people of food, health care, and fuel.

The end of blockades restored supply and reduced food prices. July 2026 inflation fell 2.79% month-on-month, the first negative reading of the year.

June 2026 inflation was 2.15% month-on-month, with first-half inflation at 4.82%. Year-on-year inflation hit 9.23% in June.

Annual inflation moderated to 4.93% after July’s drop. That is a big relief, but the crisis has left many families struggling.

What Investors and Residents Should Watch

Watch the parallel dollar rate; it is a key signal of confidence. It rose sharply in July and early August 2026.

Check the CNI and international media for updated loss estimates. The figures will likely keep changing as the crisis evolves.

Monitor any new protests or strikes. The COB and unions remain active, and another blockade could hit supply again.

For residents, keep an eye on fuel availability and food prices. For investors, look for policy changes from the Paz government.

How Bolivia Reached This Point

Bolivia’s worst economic crisis in 40 years stems from a fuel and dollar shortage. The government ended its fixed exchange rate in late June 2026, but the parallel dollar rate still jumped sharply.

Labor and peasant groups began nationwide road blockades on May 6, 2026, demanding wage hikes and an end to the shortages. These blockades choked a landlocked economy, cutting off food, health care, and fuel supplies.

The protests lasted over seven weeks, with losses estimated at around US$2.3 billion after 50 days by media. The National Chamber of Industries put the figure at over US$3 billion after 53 days.

President Rodrigo Paz faced calls to resign, but he defended his government’s handling of the crisis within democracy. The blockades ended only after a negotiated deal restored some fuel and dollar supply.

The Path to Calm

The immediate calm came from ending the blockades, which allowed food and fuel to flow again. July inflation fell 2.79% month-on-month, the first negative reading of 2026, as supply recovered.

But the underlying dollar shortage persists, with banks covering only about 88% of estimated demand. The parallel rate still hovers near Bs 12 per dollar, leaving businesses and households under pressure.

A lasting solution requires a negotiated deal between the government, labor groups, and business leaders. Restoring reliable fuel and dollar supply is key to rebuilding confidence and growth.

The cost of the crisis remains contested, with estimates ranging from US$2.3 billion to over US$3 billion. Without sustained dialogue, Bolivia risks sliding back into unrest and deeper economic pain.
