Argentina’s Peso Stays Managed as Stocks Struggle Under Tight Liquidity

Banco Nación quoted the retail dollar at ARS 1,330 to buy and ARS 1,370 to sell on August 26. The S&P Merval closed at 2,033,345.31, up 0.57%, after heavy losses the day before.

BYMA’s dollar indices ended close to the official market, with the CCL at 1,355.08 and the “Índice Dólar BYMA” at 1,352.37. The Banco Central de la República Argentina (BCRA) moved again to control liquidity.

It raised reserve requirements by 3.5 percentage points effective September 1 and allowed banks to meet the new encajes with peso-denominated Treasury instruments of at least 60 days.

The measure drains cash from the system, reduces pressure on the dollar, and channels demand into government paper. Charts show how these policies play out in markets.

The U.S. Dollar Index, calculated in real time by ICE, provides the external setting. A firmer dollar worldwide usually pressures emerging markets, and Argentina is no exception. With investors already cautious, any global dollar strength compounds local fragility.

For outside observers, the message is clear. The peso appears stable today because of deliberate and restrictive measures, not because of renewed confidence.
