Peso Holds Line as Mexico Stocks Slip on Global Dollar Jitters
Mexico’s peso traded steady near 18.68 per U.S. dollar Wednesday morning, according to Bank of Mexico data and market charts.
The currency held inside a narrow 18.60–18.75 range as investors weighed signs of political tension in the United States against Mexico’s own stable inflation and gradual monetary easing path.
The Bank of Mexico cut its key rate to 7.75% earlier this month, but inflation eased to 3.49% year-on-year in the first half of August, keeping expectations for a slow pace of future cuts intact.
Growth data remain soft, with second-quarter GDP expanding only 0.6% from the previous quarter. That mix has kept traders cautious but not willing to abandon the peso.
The broader dollar, measured by the ICE Dollar Index, hovered near 98.4 after an overnight swing caused by political moves in Washington. The index, which tracks the dollar against major global peers, remains the reference point for emerging-market currencies.

Pressure on the U.S. currency has helped the peso stabilize despite weaker oil prices and fragile global demand. Mexico’s main stock index, the S&P/BMV IPC, closed Tuesday at 58,132, down 0.62%.
Charts show momentum fading, with the index trapped between support at 57,300–57,500 and resistance around 59,000. The decline came even as Wall Street ended firmer, underscoring how local investors face their own risks.
Trading volumes in Mexico focused on América Móvil, Walmart de México, Banorte, Cemex, and Grupo México. The biggest gainers included FEMSA 23, which jumped 7.46%, and Orbia, up 4.33%.
The steepest losses hit CIE B, down 8%, and Kimberly-Clark de México, down 4.23%. That uneven performance shows both defensive consumer stocks and exporters moving in opposite directions.

From a technical angle, peso charts on both four-hour and daily views suggest consolidation. The 4-hour chart shows MACD turning higher and RSI recovering, pointing to mild upside.
The daily chart, however, keeps the currency locked in a downtrend since May, with resistance near 18.74. A break above that level could open 18.90, while a slip under 18.58 would expose this year’s lows.
For equities, the daily chart of the IPC shows fading strength as RSI sits near neutral and MACD flattens. The yellow “global liquidity index” line on the chart has failed to confirm recent rebounds, suggesting international flows into Mexico remain cautious.
Behind the numbers lies a story of resilience and restraint. The peso stays firm not because Mexico is booming but because global investors see limited alternatives in emerging markets.
The stock market slips not because companies lack value but because the external mood is fragile. With the dollar under political scrutiny in Washington and Banxico keeping its tone measured, Mexico’s markets remain a barometer of wider emerging-market nerves.
