If you are wondering what to do in Recife this weekend, you have picked a good one, because Saturday 15. Sunday 16 and Monday 17 August 2026 are packed with the kind of events Pernambuco does best.

A big free forró concert doubles as a DVD taping across the water in Olinda, a ten-day circus festival opens for free in a city park. A fair of Black-owned businesses is on at the mall, and theaters around Greater Recife are full.

We have pulled together the confirmed events, with dates, venues and exactly what you will pay. So you can plan before the days fill up.

A weekend built around forró, circus and ciranda

The best news is that many of this weekend’s highlights are completely free. The headline forró show, the whole circus festival and the Black-owned business fair all cost nothing to attend.

So you can have a full weekend without spending much at all. The action is spread across Greater Recife, the metropolitan region that includes Recife itself, neighboring Olinda and Jaboatão dos Guararapes.

However, distances are short, and the neighborhoods of Pina. Boa Viagem and the old port district of Bairro do Recife hold most of what is on.

Below we run through the free forró taping first, then explain forró for anyone new to it. Cover the circus festival and the mall fair, a Monday wellness talk.

The theater on offer, and finish with getting-around and cost tips.

Raí Saia Rodada records a free anniversary DVD in Olinda

The single biggest free plan is on Sunday 16 August. The band Raí Saia Rodada marks 25 years on the road by recording a live DVD.

And the whole thing is open to the public at no charge. It happens from 4pm in the external area of the Centro de Convenções de Pernambuco.

On Avenida Professor Andrade Bezerra in the Salgadinho district of Olinda, just over the boundary from Recife. Since it is an outdoor stage with a large crowd expected, arrive early.

Entry is free, but there is a catch worth knowing: you need to reserve a ticket online through the Evenyx platform. Limited to two per CPF (the Brazilian tax ID), and bring 2kg of non-perishable food to donate at the gate.

Guest performers announced include Joelma, Wesley Safadão and Natanzinho Lima, so the line-up runs well beyond the host band.

What is forró, and who is Raí Saia Rodada?

If you are new to the Northeast, forró is the music and dance that defines it. It is upbeat, accordion-driven party music, traditionally built around three instruments, the accordion.

The zabumba drum and the triangle, and it is danced in close pairs with a quick, shuffling step. In Pernambuco it is the sound of family parties, bars and the huge June festivals.

Raí Saia Rodada is one of the most popular acts in the more modern. Electric style known as forró eletrônico, with a quarter-century of hits behind them.

A DVD taping like this one is a big deal locally: it is part concert. Part recording session, with a bigger production and more guest stars than a normal show.

You do not need to know a single song to enjoy it. Just turn up, expect a warm and busy crowd, and let the rhythm do the rest.

It is one of the most authentic nights out you can have in the region, and this one happens to be free.

The 15th Recife Circus Festival takes over the city

The 15th edition of the Recife Circus Festival, known locally as the Mostra de Circo do Recife. Opens on Saturday 15 August and runs for ten days, through to Tuesday 25 August.

With shows, workshops and tributes at venues across the city. The opening is on Saturday 15 August at Parque Governador Eduardo Campos.

In the Pina district near the Via Mangue, with an open ‘Ocupa Circo’ takeover from 4pm to 7pm. There are hands-on circus sessions with local companies, a showcase of short acts, and a headline performance to close the afternoon.

In addition, everything at the festival is free to attend. Which makes it an easy plan for families or anyone curious about Brazilian circus arts.

Over at RioMar Recife, the big shopping mall in Pina at Avenida República do Líbano 251. The 5th Expo Preta runs through Sunday 16 August.

It is a fair of Black-owned Pernambuco businesses, with around 20 brands selling fashion, beauty, art, food, plants and crafts. Entry is free.

The fair sits on the Praça de Eventos on floor L1 and follows mall hours: 9am to 10pm on Saturday and 12pm to 9pm on Sunday. It is an easy, air-conditioned browse if the heat gets much, and a good way to support small local makers.

The fair opened on Thursday 13 August with a ciranda concert by Lia de Itamaracá at the mall’s Teatro RioMar. If you have not heard of her, she is the ‘Rainha da Ciranda’, the queen of ciranda.

A slow, circular dance from the coast of Pernambuco performed hand in hand in a big ring. Now in her eighties and officially recognized as a Living Heritage of Pernambuco.

She is one of the great voices of the state. That opening show has passed, but the fair itself is open all weekend.

Monja Coen and a wellness week on Monday

If you are around on Monday 17 August, there is a standout talk to catch. The Zen Buddhist monk Monja Coen, one of Brazil’s best-known spiritual teachers.

Gives a lecture titled ‘Mente Próspera: A Vida é Aqui e Agora’ (‘A Prosperous Mind: Life Is Here and Now’). It is at 7pm at the Teatro RioMar, inside the same RioMar Recife mall in Pina.

As part of the venue’s ‘Semana RioMar de Bem com a Vida’ wellness week running 15 to 20 August. Tickets are R$40 full price and R$20 half price (about US$8 and US$4).

Sold through the RioMar Recife app and the theater box office. The talk is in Portuguese, so a little of the language helps.

Theater across Greater Recife this weekend

Recife’s stages are busy this weekend, with plays for a range of budgets. The headline is ‘O Estrangeiro – Versão Multimídia’, a multimedia take on Albert Camus, at the Teatro Luiz Mendonça in Parque Dona Lindu.

Boa Viagem, on Saturday 15 August at 8pm and Sunday 16 August at 6pm. Tickets are R$65 half price and R$130 full (about US$13 and US$25), sold through the INTI platform.

For something more intimate, ‘Pela Noite’, marking 30 years without the writer Caio Fernando Abreu. Plays the Teatro Hermilo Borba Filho at Cais do Apolo 142 in the old port district on Saturday 15 August at 6pm and Sunday 16 August at 5pm.

From a text by Gabriel García Márquez, plays the CAIXA Cultural Recife on Saturday 15 August at 4pm and 7:30pm. At R$30 full and R$15 half (about US$6 and US$3), sold through Sympla.

More free circus on Sunday

Beyond the main festival, there is a lovely free circus show on Sunday 16 August. ‘Circo Godot’ plays the auditorium of the Museu Cais do Sertão, in the Bairro do Recife port district, at 5pm.

Entry is free, it is suitable for all ages, and it comes with audio description for visually impaired audiences. While you are there, the museum itself is worth a look, sitting right on the old waterfront.

Pairing the museum, the circus show and a wander around the restored streets of the old port makes for an easy. Low-cost Sunday afternoon in the heart of the city.

Getting around and where to base yourself

Greater Recife is spread out, so plan your trips. Boa Viagem is the main beach neighborhood where most visitors and many expats stay, with hotels.

Restaurants and an easy walk to the Teatro Luiz Mendonça in Parque Dona Lindu. The old port district, Bairro do Recife.

Holds the Museu Cais do Sertão and several theaters and is best reached by taxi or ride-hailing app, especially at night. Pina, home to RioMar Recife and the circus festival’s opening park, sits between the two.

The Sunday forró taping is across the water in Salgadinho, Olinda, which is a short ride from central Recife. Ride-hailing apps work well across the region, but fares climb when a big event lets out.

So build that into your budget for the Saia Rodada night.

What it costs and practical tips

The value play this weekend is to lean on the free events: the Saia Rodada DVD taping. The entire circus festival, the Expo Preta fair and the Sunday ‘Circo Godot’ show all cost nothing to attend.

For the free forró show, sort your Evenyx ticket in advance and buy your 2kg of donation food before you go. As gate queues can be long.

Carry a little cash for the fair’s smaller stalls and for street snacks, even though malls and official ticket sites take cards. Finally, if you are still deciding what to do in Recife this weekend.

The two easiest all-day plans are the free circus opening on Saturday in Pina and the free forró taping on Sunday in Olinda. All prices here are converted at 1 US dollar to 5.19 reais, the rate on 14 August 2026.
