Venezuela’s Saber Rattling in Esequibo Dispute

Venezuela’s National Armed Forces (FANB) have pledged to defend the disputed Essequibo territory.

This move follows Guyana’s auctioning off of oil blocks in the same area. Venezuela protested this action at the 78th UN General Assembly.

The country also accused the U.S. of wanting to control Essequibo’s oil.

Guyana received eight bids for 14 oil blocks in December 2022. ExxonMobil was among the bidders.

Georgetown maintains it can engage in economic activities anywhere within its sovereign land or sea areas.

President Nicolás Maduro expressed willingness to talk with Guyana’s leader, Irfaan Ali. They aim to restart discussions about the disputed region.

Venezuela and Guyana have disagreed on Essequibo’s ownership for over a century. This land covers 160,000 square kilometers and has abundant oil reserves.

In 1966, both nations tried to resolve the issue peacefully through an agreement. However, Guyana filed a case in 2018 at the International Court of Justice.

They want the court to validate an 1899 ruling that grants them full territory control.
