Venezuela appeals to UN over increase in poverty and inequality due to coercive measures
During a United Nations (UN) session, the Venezuelan government urged to repeal coercive measures, arguing that they contribute to increased poverty and inequality in the countries affected by such sanctions.
Joaquín Perez also expressed concern over the growing implementation of these coercive actions, asserting that they undermine multilateralism.
“There has been a worrying surge in the application and broadening of unilateral coercive measures, which eventually pose a threat to multilateralism as a whole,” he stated.
The diplomat stated that since March 2015, Venezuela has been subject to 929 unilateral coercive measures by the United States.

The Nicolás Maduro administration has also claimed the “seizure” of 7 billion dollars in European and US accounts, in addition to the appropriation of Citgo, a subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) based in Washington.
As a result of the sanctions, Venezuela’s oil sales revenue dropped from 56 billion dollars a year to 700 million dollars, as per government figures.
