According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, sending an intervention force to Haiti is being discussed in Washington.
President Joe Biden will discuss the matter during his visit to Canada.
For months, Haitian rulers and the UN have called for a new international mission to stabilize the Western hemisphere’s poorest country, plagued by gang violence, deteriorating public health, and significant political instability.
“There are discussions about some kind of United Nations multinational force in which the United States is an active participant,” Blinken told the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday (23).
“The president will be traveling to Canada tonight, and we will be having discussions with the Canadian government about what we could do together with other countries that are members of Caricom, the Alliance of Caribbean States,” Blinken affirmed.
He also confirmed that the United States will seek to strengthen the fledgling Haitian National Police, which he said lacks “adequate resources.”
The United States has a long history of intervening in the Dominican Republic’s neighbor.
Still, Biden has clarified that he does not want to send troops abroad and ended the war in Afghanistan early in his tenure.
